Default Tom Cruise does it again.

In MI 4, he ran down the tallest building the the world.

Now in MI 5, he hangs on to a Airbus A400 as it takes off.

say what you want about him (and there is lots), but the 52 year old guy has guts!

Quote:
Tom Cruise admits his Mission Impossible 5 plane stunt terrified him
Quote:
"I was actually scared ****less," Cruise told a crowd at CinemaCon at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas on Tuesday. "I was in a harness, on my side, that was kind of loose so you can see the vibration of my body against the plane."

The Rogue Nation star had made a surprise appearance during a showcase of footage from the movie at the annual convention, during which he told cinema owners and exhibitors he performed the stunt eight times at 1.5 kilometres (5000 feet) in the air.

And it was on the second take that "I got hit by just a little particle". "I literally thought it broke my ribs," he said
Quote:
Perhaps the trickiest form of navigation was of a different variety. Initially, Airbus was reluctant to loan the A400 to the production; it would hardly be good publicity for its sleek new aircraft if one of the world's biggest movie stars tumbled off it at thousands of feet. Executives were especially reluctant because the takeoff would take place at a sharp angle much more common to an air show than, say, a red-eye from LAX.

Poor Tommy was scared.

AirBorne Troopers do worse odds everyday.
Bet they had him strapped so good even the plane crashing would have him walking away.

Not impressed myself.

You're overlooking the pure economics of it on a production: when your star is at risk and his 'bankable star' fee is in excess of $20 million...the insurance/bond factor is a little steep. A lot of people from gaffers to the teamsters count on the man being alive to do his lines. John Candy died making one of his own flicks and its a real mess.($15 million payout) Mr. Cruise ain't one of my favs but the gent does climb into a P-51 Mustang... I wouldn't do that! Worth an estimated 450 million, as of 2012 he was the highest paid actor. http://www.netquote.com/health-insurance/news/uninsurable-hollywood-stars.aspx http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/25/business/insuring-hollywood-against-falls-but-not-flops.html?_r=0 On one yearlong TV production I did security on, the star, a very kind and considerate fellow, was riding his 'rice rocket' between takes...W/O his helmet! I caught his eye and slapped the top of my head adamently and immediately he stopped, went to his personal assistant following closely in a station wagon, and put the helmet on-the assistant thanked me. Point being: the star, a true professional, knew he was putting the production at risk and complied instantly. Mel Gibson reportedly had to cover his friend, Robert Downey Jr,(the Singing Detective-2003) due to his heroin issues, so he could even work again.

Then why did he not have the helmet on to start with?

When you said he'd done it again I thought you meant that spending a month or two overseas living in 5* hotels and working 15 hour days was worse than being detached to a war zone.

The guys a prick but I do like most of his movies. Can't say the same for Nicolas Cage.

I think the most telling comments about Cruise came in a review by Siskel & Ebert regarding one of his movies. One of the critics noted a main problem with Cruise is you don't really see or believe the characters he plays because it seems to always be a sort "Oh, look, Tom Cruise is playing a 'such-and-such'" rather than Cruise is actually living the character. The comparison was made how other actors, such as Hanks, Crowe, and others made you forget there was an actor on the screen and you saw and cared about a fully fleshed-out character...

Another comment made over the years regarding Cruise is he is a "lazy" actor, who only applies himself when he is faced with appearing alongside a much better co-star such as Nicholson, Hoffman, Hackman, etc. I think this is a rather fair assessment..

I'm not impressed with your ridiculously unrelated comparison that probably just has to do with your hate for Cruise.

I don't like him either, but we are talking MOVIES and from that perspective, this stunt is on a new level.

wolf_howl15 Hometown boy...

Cruise is from the same city I grew up in.

If his acting sucks, blame it on the director for not motivating the guy properly and just accepting the performance.

Unfortunately, some less than masterful actors are more like the 800 pound gorilla in the room. Since Hollywood is now the domain of the bean counters and money-changers, the bottom line is very literally the bottom line. It's all about the "big open" and "first dollar". "First dollar" refers to the taking of a percentage of the gross revenue (not profits, either pre- or post-tax) of a film, also know as "percentage of gross". The studio, producers, and in some cases stars, writers, and a very few others, are able to get their take right off the top. Anyone else who may stand to get a piece of the films take have to get theirs from the pre- or post-tax reckonings. A "big open" (no, it's not the space between Cruise's ears) refers to a very large gross revenue on a film's opening day; the larger the gross, the larger the amount taken by the big guys. If a "star" can deliver a "big open" consistently, he/she can pretty much get away with whatever they want, including poor acting and ignoring the director and, if they are really big money makers, thumb their nose at the studio. As an analogy, think about diva NBA superstars who seem to get away with near murder simply because they put butts in the seats and generate massive media revenue for the team's owners (think Kobe Bryant)...
