Default I'm shocked very much indeed

Earlier today my 9 year old Niece asked me what I knew about WWII

Was thinking a lot, what can I tell a 9 year old girl and what does she understand(she's a Mensa child)

So I just told the main line. The war started when Germany attacked Poland a.s.o

When did the war end she asked me

In Europe it ended in May 45 and in the Pacific Aug 45.

Later on I asked my sister if they was learning about WWII in their history lesson?

No not yet my sister replied. our Niece, have told me, that every child on the school goes round and say that Hitler was a great guy and he was cool

That chocked me

My sister have written a very seriously letter to the school.

Hopefully the children will get clever as they grow up.

Markus

Are you sure that your nice is not miss understanding a joke of some kind? You say that she is a Mensa aka "gifted" has a higher than average IQ. Sometimes these type children and even into adulthood can be a bit aloof. Usually these kids do not spend the full day with the other students partly because they can find the regular course and partly because some can be a bit aloof and interact awkwardly with others. A good friend from was like that high IQ a bit aloof of course as he matured he became less so.

Just a suggestion it might be some sort of joke or a way to get attention.

I think you mean to say "shocked" not "chocked" unless you are a parked aircraft then you would want your wheels chocked. Most likely a typo that you missed.

What kind of school is that and what is the ethnic background of the pupils there?

We have that in Germany as well - at schools with huge proportions of children from Arab and Turkish migrant famlies. And as I was able to see myself, in those countries Hitler is extremely popular. I got often congratulated when they learned I was a German, and was told that I should be proud of belonging to a people that had such a great leader killing so many Jews.

No joke or exaggeration, I mean it bloody serious.

I can only tell you what my sister told me.

My Niece my be very skilled indeed, but there are things she still don't understand.

I also understand I have said something wrong to my Niece- Told her that the war in Pacific ended Aug 45 it was Sept-45

We live on an Island with a very low percentage of foreigners.

Guess it's about 70-80 % ethnics Danes and rest from around the world( I really don't know) I can only say it was a huge different from living in my former town and now living on this Island.

A question- why does it only have to be foreigners that goes round and say these things, couldn't ethnic german children or ethnic Danish children going around and say the same? just a thought.

Yeah you never know for sure could be some kids with "interesting" parents they usually spout what ever they hear mom and dad say.

At least she questioned the reasoning instead of following along.

When she came home from school, she asked her mom who Hitler was and my sister told her that Hitler was the german leader during WWII and my sister asked her, why she was asking about this person and then my Niece told my sister why..the rest you know

But you are right most kids hear stuff from their parents

Openly praising Hitler in Germany is dared by two groups only: Neonazis, and Palestinian/Turkish/Arab groups, and even the Neonazis have learned for the most to be clever enough to hide that a bit. And when you have schools where 50%, 70% and in some hotspots even 90% of the pupils are from Muslim foreign families, then you easily have problem with shameless propagation of such opinions, or German-bashing/-mobbing.

Since you say that you live somewhat isolated and not more than 20% of shcool pupils are not ethnical Danes, I assume there is no hotspot and no Islam porblem background. Leaves the question for Nazi backgrounds, maybe? Scandinavia has small but well organised Nazi organisations. And in Germany these often like to pester small villages and isolated regions in the Eastern part of Germany, in the federal states that earlier belonged to the GDR. Here they have even the political majority in some small towns and villages. Talking about regions that due to economic and demographic decline are somewhat disconnected from the rest of Germany, offering residents no perspectives.

You should educate her that the word "great" is not synonymous with the word "good".

Of course with today's "dictionaries" who can tell what the new definitions of words are.

Yeah could be something like; "Hitler was a great plague upon the world" or "Hitler could have been a great water colorist had he been accepted to art school in Vienna."

About 99 % of the children in her school is ethnics danes, there are some foreigners.

Some more to the story

Have just talked to my sister about it, getting more information

My Niece thought that this Hitler was some kind of a famous footballplayer the way the other children talked about him.
When my sister told her who this Hitler was and how evil he was my Niece couldn't understand why...why praise some person who's so evil.

But onto your niece, don't they teach about that period in school?
My kids done their first stuff on the holocaust way back in national(primary) school.
I don't know how their school program looks like. She's only in 4th grade and they have history lesson. that I do know, but lesson about WWII ? I don't know when they are going to read about that.

Edit: This school have grades from 0(kindergarden) to 9 grade. It could very well be that it was some of the kids from higher grades that was going around and saying these things.
