There will always be conflict due to conflicts of interest, greed and ideologies.

I think the author of the story was looking at the wrong theater and the actors who will be involved. I think it more likely that WW III will be centered in the middle east and involve a rising tide of Muslim extremism that seems hell bent on wiping Israel off the map and taking over the world with the installation of an Islamic dictatorship.
