Wow....in New Brunswick.
![]() I realize law enforcement tragedies like this happen everywhere, but I recall reading a study where Maine was determined to be the safest state in the Union. So, I guess I just figured it's bucolic Canadian neighbor would be the most sheltered place in North America. Yeah. Social media on the lamb. Isn't the 21st century just overflowing with the narcissism? ![]() |

Wow. Close to home. Moncton is a 2 hour drive from here. We go there all the time to shop and visit friends. Still in shock. 20 RCMP and 3 Charlottetown police dept. members from this province are now in Moncton to help in the search for the shooter.
Sincere condolences to the families of the slain officers. God bless them all.

And he's now in custody - well done RCMP!
Apparently he surrendered quickly and peacefully once found. Perhaps not so crazed after all ![]() |

Warning the following is almost certainly in bad taste and is spoilered for your protection.
In all seriousness though my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims. |

Canada shootings: Man arrested in Moncton, New Brunswick http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-27727610 There's an interesting set of figures regarding firearms homicide rates in some countries at the bottom of the linked page. Switzerland coming in at second surprised me. |

The other thing to keep in mind is that the nature of the crimes is also quite different between countries. Switzerland has a huge proliferation of guns and training, and a lot of the sort of domestic violence and settling of accounts that elsewhere would be done with stabbing or hitting seems to happen with firearms there. In Canada, honestly, I can't remember cases where shooting sprees were indiscriminate - all the recent notorious cases were targeted vendettas (against the police or as part of gang wars), with bystanders occasionally caught in the crossfire. I would not be surprised if it turns out this guy had a chip on his shoulder against the RCMP and went out of his way to target them. Since he was hiding out in residential neighborhoods all this time, he had lots of opportunity to kill more people but did not. Methinks the Mounties were his target.

Adding a pile of African and Latin American countries puts the US off the top spot, adding some more of them puts Switzerland way down the list. Or you could just add some other European nations to put Switzerland off the #2 spot. |

My condolences to the families of the victims.
While these actions are heinous in every respect, it's nice to know that America doesn't have a monopoly on crazy gits killing people.
