I was able to visit one of those subs in Den Helder in 2007. They are very nice - but very tight. The crew hasn´t as comftable rooms as the german crews on 206a. But the subs have a sterling diesel engine - it can be run submerged without snorkel. So the subs are powerful and wellarmed but uncomftable for the crew - typical subs.

That depends from the point of look: from US-Navy side they are very small (Los Angeles class up to 7100t submerged, Ohio even bigger). From german submariners look they are very big (2800t submerged - 206a 500t submerged, 212 class 1800t submerged).

A big (or small?) sub with very functional design. Not uggly. Small, heavy armed, easy moveable and not slow - perfect combination for a diesel powered sub.

Roger that. One of the first sub with x-rudder. They gives better maneuverability together with better protection when going on ground of the seas.
