Patrolling grids, worth it or not?

The title basically sums up this thread. Trying to figure out if i actually get anything for patrolling these 3 grids where there's rarely a fight to be had. Or just focusing on getting the total tonnage for each mission and completing it. Is there any benefit to staying on mission and patrolling the assigned grids? Or will i get the same benefits from just hunting wherever the sea, and my half full fuel tanks take me?
