I downloaded it through Steam, launch the game and see the UBI logo and the intro, then it crashes immediately afterwards.

![]() ![]() Welcome to Subsim ![]() I think you have problems with one of your mods . Do you use SH3Commander 3.2 and JSGME ( Generic mod enabler ) If you don't have them , download them as soon as you can . but if you have them both , do as follow : * Disable all of your mods with JSGME * And after that , enable one mod at a time , step by step . * It can be you're not enable them in right order ![]() If not , I'm sure there's other who can help you ![]() Good Luck ![]()

Solution: Went to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\silent hunter 3\data\Movies\Intro
And simply renamed the files. Game loads fine now. |

This is a known issue with some installs of SH3; it has to do with a conflict in your set of codices; renaming or deleting these movie files usually is the solution. I was getting ready to suggest what you discovered when I saw your last note. If you install GWX3.0 you will have a problem with their opening also, and you will need the same solution.

I know this is an ancient thread, but after a thorough search over the internet I can't find the solution to this problem.
I am running Windows 7 and packed my game with mods. Yet it worked perfectly. I don't know why, but yesterday it had Crashes to Desktop. I don't think I changed anything, it's the same old game that was running well in the last few months. I tried all of the solutions mentioned here, tried to deactivate mods with JSGME, but that didn't work neither. What is causing this? |

I had a similar effect with my copy of SH3. I bought it online and dl'ed it so maybe it's this version that's different from the 'install from disk/cd' version.
It started when I made up a new captain/campaign. I had played the game before with more than one user name in the 'select your captain' list, and there were no problems (beyond the normal ones) that I could see. This time, I had two, lets call them johan koenig and klaus fisch. Johan is first, and his career is going well, but let's say I save him in mission because I have a convoi with passenger liners that I want to sink. But I don't feel like getting into it, so I save for later. But I still want to play, just not go after anything so involved. So I make a new captain, klaus, and start siming. The problem I found in my case seemed to be the game did not know which 'main captain name' to load. I could boot up the ubisoft logo, the opening movie, and title screen, but as soon as the red status bar filled halfway (about the point the game was looking for the "captain".cfg file), boom, crash to desktop. Every time. without fail. I "fixed" it, I think by removing all .cfg that did not say johan koenig, and then running the install shield's 'repair' utility. Dbl click on my SH3 icon, and ...load ubisoft screen, load opening movie, load silent hunter 3 title screen, and .......red bar fills all the way. Back in business! That's why I am wary of keeping any more than 1 captain name going. I guess if I want to start over again totally, I will have to delete JK's files, make a new name and run the repair from the install menu again, just to be sure. I used to be good with computers, now, what I don't know could fill a warehouse (harddrive), so for me, any kind of 'technical fix' is a minor miracle. |

By the way, it seems to have been a very simple thing. I just had to find a few files from a mod, that somehow didn't delete itself together with JSGME. Moral - don't install incompatible mods. |
