Well I'm Brand new to subsim but a old hand at silent hunter. After finishing SH3 (with GWX gold & SH3 commander) I treated myself to silent hunter 4, couldn't get my mits on the gold edition

but I'm patched up to V1.4.

The only thing I could never manage on SH3 was the manual TDC but that's all changed with SH4! After reading & watching how to manually target till my brain melted, then sinking the destroyer in the submarine school after 6-7 failed attempts. I'm ready to hit the career, 100% ish realism (I'm keeping map contacts on untill i can hit things with manual TDC & external views because i want to see all the prettiness for my first few patrols) & hard difficulty because I want the escorts to get really angry with me!

Two quick questions though:

1: How can I change the names of my crew? As sad as it sounds naming my crew in SH3 made me care for each and every one of them.

2: What is with my sub? it doesn't react to rough waves at all? It has even floated above the sea between waves? total immersion killer! surely there's a fix?

Anyway thanks for reading and wish me luck in the Pacific. Good God I'm going to need it!

Glad to hear from you. You have not mentioned any mods. There are many and you have an adventure ahead. Your issue of the wave riding is likely fixed by one or more mods.

As to naming your crew, I too love to put my friends and neighbors aboard and do my own kind of multiplayer. To do this, edit with notepad, the file:

crewmembernames.upc which is found in the folder UPCData, in the Data folder.

The names are a long list of first and last names, so you can't fix which ones will be used. They are randomly chosen for you. What you can do is add your names, replacing the ones in file. As they have done, repeat names that you like to improve chances of getting the favorites.

The names are only chosen on new missions or campaigns.

I've looked into the mods and wow! there's a lot. I'm not too good at the whole modding thing but I've found one. I'm steering clear of the 'SuperMods' like gwx for SH3 because my PC is an old relic and I don't want push it any more than vanilla SH4 does if i can help it.

The Mod is "SH3_to_SH4_sub_physics" it sounds perfect but I have no idea how/where to install/copy files to get it working. Any advice or links I could look at?

Sorry for my green-ness to the forums and mods in general but the fact all my little niggles appier to have been bought up and fixed tell me this is THE forum to be on as a silent hunter player

Thanks for all the greetings and advice, i'll be sure to check out the suggesed mods too. I may need to call my dad as he was the one who said to get gwx/commander for sh3 so maybe he'll know how to get me modded up. Besides the "sub floats above waves" thing i'm happy with the game so far. But that may just be me being foggy eye because i got a new game
