Default Black flag

Having got everything working and GWX installed I start a mission. So... there's me, gently paddling round when I come across a cargo ship in the middle of the night. The thing's lit up like a christmas tree! Searchlights here and there and, particularly, searchlights on the black flag it's flying.

Black flag? Out of curiosity I manoeuvred closer but no, even from under 1km away it was still black. Ho hum.

Is this just me being an idiot or is it a known bug? Is there a workaround?

The way the lights work in SH3, the spotlights shining on the flag make it appear dark. I've used external view to get right up next to it and it's still hard to make out.

The good news is that it doesn't matter. All lit ships are neutral and not to be attacked. Take care though - not all neutral ships are lit, and if they're dark you still need to check the flags.

Thank you, Steve.
I wondered if there was something like that.

I believe there was a mod to fix the flag visibility problem, but I don't remember the details.

As was pointed out, in game, if the lights are on, it's 100% guaranteed to be neutral.

Lights off, it could be neutral or hostile. Cheater way to check is try to up your time compression. You won't be able to go very high if an enemy is in sight.

Otherwise either see the flag, or check your position on the map. If you are in questionable waters you'll want to check more closely. On the other hand if you are sailing up the Thames it's probably hostile.
