New black cab designed for London

The vehicle has an automatic gearbox and a new front bumper panel.

Quote:
A new black cab designed specifically for use in London has been unveiled.

Car manufacturer Nissan says the 1.6 litre petrol-engine taxi will be cleaner than the current diesel cabs which are used in the capital.

The taxi was first unveiled in August 2012 but following feedback from the Mayor of London's office the vehicle was modified.

Round headlamps and a re-modelled grille are key features of the new taxi, which goes on sale in December.

The car has been developed by the company's European design centre in Paddington, west London.

Looking nice.

I still dont think you can beat the traditional TX4, which is symbolic of London, ust as the yellow taxi is symbolic of NY.

With fuel prices what they are, I'm surprised that they haven't brought back the old London cab yet:

Looks awful. I would feel like a rubbish bin if being shuttled around in that... that... that rolling Blade Runner thing.

By the external looks, they should keep the design of the old cars, with new tech under the hood and behind the panels. Those taxis are iconic, as Oberon said.

I gotta say the London cabs and the metro are superb; and I've been on the NY subways and Bay Area BART too. I drove most of the UK on the left which at my age is 'reverse combat engineering' but knew better than to try it in London proper. And there is no need to drive there as the alternative is so much better and worry free "Mind the GAP!" still rings in my head as you exit the metro-car! One thing though: crossing the street is perilous for yanks who don't look right first...and unlike America, vehicles have 'right of way' not the pedestrian. This simple error has killed quite a few Yanks apparently; my daughter 'yanked' me back twice at the curb in London. RULE #1 ROUNDABOUTS ARE NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!

Not for a few years, but the last time I did...well...good point. Fuel is probably cheaper...

Urban myth I'm afraid. Got repealed in '76.

That one is actually a bit easier to deal with than you'd think. Most horse and carts these days carry a sort of canvas catcher behind the horse but before the driver. Not the most pleasant thing for the passengers admittedly, but then compared to CO2 and CO from traffic fumes it's probably a lot healthier for you, plus you can spread it on your roses.

The Road Traffic Act 19-whenever actually states that pedestrians have the right of way over vehicles. But don't try pulling that kind of crap in London, or you'll cop some good old-fashioned British abuse in it's genuine London accent! Also, I'm not brave/stupid enough to drive in Central London either...
