A couple of GWX questions

Please can anyone explain why, occasionally, a sunken ship marker appears on the chart in grey? They are usually red - I wondered if it might be because I didn't hang around to observe the sinking (in attack) but I still got credited with 'the kill' . . .

Second question, yesterday I tried running the game entirely in German (I usually run in English with German speech) and was surprised by the change in the radio messages received - much more detailed general war reports from Deutsche Rundfunk or OKW and as far as I could translate no messages between BdU and other boats - the latter seem to dominate the English text versions of radio messages - why does changing to German text make such a difference and does it change anything else? I ask this because after changing to German text I experienced my first patrol without any contact with the enemy - I returned to base after 35 days with just the smell of diesel left in the tanks!

1. You are correct, if you do not witness the sinking, the marker will be grey.

2. There are different text files for each language used in SH3, so what you get in the radio reports depends on the content of those files. It will have no effect on whether you find ships or not though.

I have come to the conclusion that the additional radio reports that come with GWX have little or no significance on the game play - that being the case, is there any way to stop them from reducing time compression down to 1 ?

Alternatively is there a simple tweak to enable 1024 time compression with a single key stroke?

If I correctly recall there are some that are events that you can in fact participate in if close enough. I believe these are presented with an Enigma grid reference rather than lat/long coords though.
