Default The mystery thread

Hi guys and girls I thought I'd start something non unique for any Londoners who listen to a certain radio show on a Thursday between 1200 and 1300 GMT you already know how this goes.

Basically you ask a question and if someone on the forum knows the answer they respond quoting the question, now this realy depends on honesty and knowledge as we all are aware search engines are very useful! Now for this question and answer thread I emplore you do not use it call it a "celebration of combined knowledge."

Now upon answering the question you must supply how you know the answer to be factually correct by saying " search engine 1 page 3 5th line down says "with a link will render the answer void.

For example: Oberon posts "if we took all the ships sailing the worlds oceans out of the water how much will the sea level drop?"

Jimbuna replies "6microns" I obtained the knowledge while reading a book calculating displacement theories twenty years ago that's an answer

So fire away and have fun !!

My first question is a simple one:

How do you define the classification of a warship type ie what denotes it's a destroyer and not a frigate ?

Reason I'm asking is because the British type 22 frigates are larger than the type 42 destroyers they supplement

Who's navy? I think there is some historical convention involved.

I think it also has something to do with available firepower and the role that they are used for. There was a similar problem, IIRC, with what defined a cruiser in the post-war period, especially with Soviet designs.
In regards to how I know this, I believe I ran into a similar problem whilst researching ship classifications for a forum based game I used to admin, although it was how to define a cruiser rather than a frigate/destroyer, but the same problem has occurred, especially in the Royal Navy.

How many concurrent questions can we have open at one time?

Oh and Kapitan you didn't explain how you knew the answer to my first question.
