Permission to come aboard?

I found an unused copy of the Silent Hunter III dvd at the Leamington Spa Re-use Centre where I work and thought that it looked interesting. The last time I played with any sort of naval simulation game was back in the early 1980s - long before the Internet made this stuff easy - I think the game was called "Hunt the Bismark" and it was played on my Apple IIc and ran nicely on my available 32kb of RAM . . .

Anyway, as it was over a year since I bought the DVD, I decided to give Silent Hunter III a try - before I knew it I was totally immersed with my boat and crew, making 33 patrols before getting the message that 'the war is ended'.

I have now added the 1.4 patch and GWX3 and started out again with two patrols before the war and now on my third patrol in September 1939 - all seems to be going well except that I could do without some of the frequent radio messages . . .

The realism is enhanced by the fact that I live on a boat. At one point in the game while trying to evade a destroyer escort there was a huge bang and my boat rocked violently. In real life, another boat had been trying to go astern and had accidentally collided with me while I was tied up. I was so immersed in the game that it almost gave me a heart attack . . .

those in-marina maneuvers are tough; I damage my SHV Uboat routinely just getting out of Lorient, and as jibman/ grinder aboard an actual 30 footer out of Vallejo, it helps to have a long boat hook for 'fending off' as my real life skipper is a little inept exiting the docks; trust you were'nt

damaged too much!

No damage (except to my mental stability!) its a tough old boot - although built as a narrow boat for UK inland waterways it was also designed to be able to navigate tidal waters - and we have been down the Severn Estuary as far as Portishead . . .

I have always been interested in subs - my father took me to see what I think was a real U-Boot being scrapped at Cashmores in Newport when I was about three years old and 35 years later I was privileged to be invited aboard and shown round a modern American sub although I think the conditions aboard could hardly be compared with those of WWII . . .

Interesting your "mod" for better immersion in the game...I never played SH3 or SHIV in a boat. But I played SH3 in an airliner, installed in a laptop, a 8 hours flight hunting allied merchants. Great fun!
