Is this game playable without mods?

Well, is it?

No. I wish I had a dollar for every time that question's been asked.

You can play the vanilla game. I'm sure there are many out there that do and are completely unaware of how to mod a game or even of Subsim.com's existance.

But knowing that there are mods, and they do improve the game, why would you even ask the question?

If this is your first time playing, try out the first campaign without mods, and then start a new campaign with mods; you'll notice a huge difference in terms of gameplay and immersion. Although playable without mods, they're for all intents and purposes mandatory.

In the "vanilla" game, a 7000 ton ship "unrealistically" takes 3 torpedoes to sink, the only way to sink a ship is to bring down its "health", airplanes won't attack you whatsoever, and the interface and controls are so minimalist that it feels like an arcade shooter rather than a simulation. The game's manual doesn't even cover manual TDC and expects you to man the deck guns yourself, rather than let you order the crew to do it. In short, grab mods.

As my first post, I'll take the side of everyone else. I remember when I first bought SH5, it became loads more interesting after I discovered mods. Like any PC game, why not play it with mods instead of asking if it's playable without?

I will go over some of the basic questions that get asked regularly around here:

- can you play the game without mods?

sure, its a functioning game its just arcade like and very simplistic and unrealistic in stock form

- if you know what mods can do would you want to play without them?

no, not when you see just how much even a few basic mods can improve the game.

- is the game really as bad as I have heard about?

yes and no, it all depends on your expectations and what you are looking for the game to be like

- is it as hard as I have heard to get mods to work and what about all the ctd issues I have heard about?

this problem is mostly caused by impatient people failing to read the mod instructions and follow them as directed. people "skim" the reading info with mods then cry when they don't work or the game crashes but its because they are too lazy to read the instructions 98% of the time.

hope that helps
