Default Aft tube shots?

I'm using the Dick O'Kane method for shooting - it's the only one I've learnt so far and it seems the least complicated to me.

I don't use the PK at all.

Yesterday I was trying to take down a tanker, ran out of forward facing torpedoes, so I moved into position for an aft tube shot, however it went wrong and I missed completely, this is what I did -

The target was coming from the right so I set the scope to 200 (if the target was coming from the right for a front tube attack I'd set the scope to 20).
Range was already set, but I clicked on the send to TDC button twice anyway.
I set the AOB to port 70 degrees, because I was on the targets port side and 70 is 90 minus the offset in the scope (20) and then I clicked the send to TDC button twice.
Speed was already set, but again I clicked on the send to TDC button twice anyway.

Then I fired when the target was passing 200 on my scope.

The fish then went and did a u-turn and headed for a point in front of my sub.

So what went wrong?

Gyro errors happen, also did you check the range dial? sometimes it sets back to 200 and will cause it to make a hard turn.

Also, the PK is NOT complicated, you enter the data, enter it into TDC, activate PK, it updates info without looking at target, based off you the initial info you put in.Try the PK again, it's simple and easy.Never understood why many get intimidated by the PK, it's a huge asset in this sim as it was in real life.

It is hard to say without see the geometry drawn out, but I can think of a few possibilities.
  1. The track angle was not the 90 degrees that you wanted.
  2. The order you input the info into the TDC caused problems
Usually, I would send speed, Aob, range, and bearing in that order. Always input bearing last, because it is the most critical. I'm not sure what results I would get doing speed last as you describe.

To be honest, I agree with Bubblehead. The PK was a substantial advantage, and I don't know why so many are eager to throw it away.

You clicked to many buttons LOL

I never send anything to TDC. You didn't say what the range was but when I do this I leave my scope at 180 degrees. I do not change anything at all. Whether coming from port to starboard or the other way around it really doesn't matter. I normally am within 1000 meters when I fire. I will follow the ship, tube doors open and I will wait until the ship is at 190 or 170 respectively and quickly shift my scope to 180 and fire. There is a built in offset at this range of ten degrees and I have learned to compensate for it by using this meathod. I have a 95% hit rate doing this. I also use the same method for firing the forward tubes.

I change no settings. I do no math. I have simply learned to lead the target by estimating speed in my head. Could I tell you how fast it was going? NO! But my brain doesn't need a number.

I find that if I have accidentally click any buttons anywhere this all gets thrown off so I have it set on manual targeting and never change anything except my scope heading. I will even at times keep the scope down and simply move the scope in order to fire in a direction I wish the fish to go too. I have used this method firing at radar bearings only and sunk merchants and capital ships in storms with it using non-homing torpedoes, it works that well.
