New to the SubSim but seems like a fun game but a few questions
Hey everyone. A buddy let me try Silent Hunter 5 for a bit at his house and it seemed fun so I went out an bought it on steam and activated it on Uplay which I thought was unusual. You would think that it would just run from steam directly like most other games do but ok. So I got Uplay going and I tried updating the game from the steam Directory(Steam--SteamApps--Common--Silent Hunter 5--Support--Gameupdater)
Cause well everyone says the 1.2 update is a must have for Silent Hunter 5 but it updates then says no installation of Silent Hunter exists which is well stupid because im updating the game from the installed directory!!!! (Using Windows 8 64bit) The game runs cause ive run it and it loads and plays etc.. It just wont update. If anyone has a solution to that It would be appreciated and then the second question is mods.. I hear there is like 50 ofem and you pay to get them. For a beginner are they worth it? I have a highend card(GTX 760) So any graphic enhancements would be cool. Thanks for reading and for any help |

I cant help with the steamupdate stuff .. as I trie to avoid steam as the plague. From the limited experience I do have with it, you just use the steam client to update the game afaik ..
The mods are free .. there is a download limit on accounts tho .. you can download 5 mods a day .. cheapest membership makes that 25 AND gives access to the bonus area, where most mods that are current and semi stable are packed together in zip's. Without the mods, the game is worthless imho. You, being a steam user, have the issue that you can not patch the .exe directly .. you'd need to get a copy of boxed version 1.2 .exe and place that in your install folder, probably after you copied that to a new location in order to make steam unaware of it's location and changed .exe Afaik, there are no important registry settings to worrie about so copy\paste should work, altho it might mess with the default paths suggested by some tools. So yeah, mods are essential and patcher is highly recommended due to the stock version being riddled with bugs that make it ok as arcade shooter, but if you want realism, and working sensors, you need mods and patches. Thanks. I went ahead and subscribed as I love sim games and I see myself spending hours with this game. I moved the install directory out of steam and into the C: Drive itself. Im gonna go look for that 1.2 update online before I mod the game. I downloaded JSGME so I should be set there.
EDIT: I moved the installation Directory to the Ubisoft Folder(Program Files--Ubisoft) where I own a few other games from Ubisoft and the game still wont update.. The Gameupdater keeps saying I don't have the game installed. I wonder if its Uplay. This is strange. I need to figure out where the patches are trying to read the game or where they think the game should be. Last edited by Krono99; 10-04-13 at 02:37 PM. |

Moving the game around before it's updated wont work for sure .. steam will err.
Perhaps this topic can be of help ? There's an updater from ubisoft listed somewhere in the comments .. I'm pretty sure you need the game to be in it's original location tho. What I was talking about with the patcher, concerns patches made by the community, because ubisoft management pulled the plug on development too soon and didnt fix it, so 'they' did it themselves. These community made patches can only be applied to the boxed version .. cuz steam replaces the .exe with a loader .. and fetches the original .exe at game start .. from the steam cloud .. where we cant patch it. |

Well I guess im just a contributer then lol
Guess im just a contributor then lol. I guess steam automatically updates the game or something I hear. If I knew about not being able to mod with steam I would have bought the boxed version. Ahh well Ill have to go out and get the boxed version. It should be somewhere out there for a decent price.

Steam wont update the game, it will be updated by Ubisoft once it is launched. Its part of the DRM this game has attached to it, make sure the game is installed where Steam put it, go ahead and verify the cache and then launch it. Uplay should update it while it launches, you'll know if it is 1.2 when you get to the main menu, it will say v1.2 in the upper right corner.
Steam isn't so bad, you just have to know how it works. |

You can, you just need to work around a few minor issues. Like steam changing the executable back, and getting a non-steam 1.2 executable for the game.
If you manage that, you're golden for the patcher ![]() |

Are you talking about mods?
My game version is 1.2.0
What if I never played the game from steams application or I moved the installation out of steam and used JSGME and always used the exe in the folder. Would steam still be able to change the executable if I moved the game say... ProgramFiles--Ubisoft |

You can pick up a DVD version of the game for silly prices from Amazon, its where I got mine. Also the Gamersgate version would be just a Uplay version as well, so that would work. I know it might sound a bit offputting buying another version and all that, but if you want to mod it and patch the executable and have a real immersive experience with the game, then that is what I would really suggest.

Dont have the DVD Version
I don't have the DVD Version. Even if I use JSGME with the exe in the folder steam will overwrite the exe and the mods wont work right? As is my understanding
