Default What is the purpose of the observation scope?

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but I don't see the point of the observation scope. It seems like it has the same size and magnification as the attack scope.

Do I lose anything by using just the attack scope for everything? What was the observation scope used for in real life? Why even have two if they're the same?

Is there something wrong with my installation? Should they be different?

Sorry for my ignorance, just seems like you could save some money and just have one scope lol

I'm using GWX with whatever was in the list (can't remember all items on the list but most of what came with it, I installed).

In this mod: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=167126
- there have a documentation folder, look there and read the file "German U-Boat optics.pdf"

I haven't used this mod in a few years and I haven't read the optics PDF noted. That said, there was a mod under development to make the observation scope just that. The GUI was different, if I recall correctly, rectangular, and without any targeting or fire controls. It could only be used for observation, not attacking.

The document is not for the mod. It says about the real life German U-Boat optics, this was the question.

The Observation periscope had a larger head and allowed in more light, making it easier to look for enemy ships. The Attack 'scope had a small head, making it harder for the enemy to see. This resulted in it allowing in less light, making it progressively less effective in darker conditions. The field of view was about the same for both. The Observation 'scope could also could pan upward to search for aircraft.

I reckon I have a work around to simulate the attack and observer scope, characteristics. Building a new Gui for myself atm, hope to add it in.

Ok thanks guys! Now it makes sense. So the Observation scope should provide a greater field of view for "rough" searching . ?

If I download the Hitman mod does this overwrite whatever I installed using GWX? I assume it is a "first come first serve" type deal?

Sorry for my ignorance, I just think I have this mod thing figured out and along comes something else.. lol..

This has nothing to do with realism, but for game play I actually prefer the O scope, especially with convoys early in the war. The 4.5x is good enough to set up the shot, but still gives a pretty nice wide tactical view.

What are your thoughts?
