Starting fresh, but...

I'm trying to start off a new career (since my "demise" in the last was my fault), but each time I start it it gives me S-36 37 or 38. I've reloaded it 15 times, same result.

Is there a way to edit my sub number, or the database list?

Try selecting another class, then going back to the s class, should change up the boat it gives you.

No luck Bubbs, only S classes offered are #'s 36 37 & 38, at least on my install.

Does anyone know how to make the whole Sboat list available when it randomly assigns boats, or is there a reason only 3 boats are offered? I remember in stock I was assigned the 18 herself once & was very excited.

You can definitely edit the sub name - you could call her the USS Coney Island Trout, if you wanted to - Unfortunately I can't remember the files you need to edit, but they're mentioned in a thread on here, so it has to be searchable

Strange, I've had S-18 to the S-42.Currently have S-47 out of Brisbane.Last night i witnessed Savo Island battle(attacked just before Japanese made contact with US.torpedoed a heavy cruiser, through the japanese off their game.Battle was more of a draw than a massacre of US.Japanese lost 3 heavy and one light cruiser.US lost 3 with 2 more dead in water.Other casualties possible, it was dark.Definitely was not the massacre of US ships I witnessed last time I watched the battle.Funny how sinking one ship through the AI off it's game.Japanese are all set to elite, US forces at competent.

I thought there was a file with the flotilla/squadron that had the available ships listed. Am I wrong about that?

I found a file with lists of ship Type names, but nothing with a list of names. I can't find the list that is randomly drawn from to get the name of your first boat.

Not being mean, being honest here but Its all luck of the draw...and you just seem to have terrible luck, I'd do what the others suggested and mod the files (shrug)

Look in the playersettings.cfg file in your Documents/Silent Hunter directory. Pretty sure the unit name may be what you are looking for.

But then again, I could be wrong.

Go to C:\Users\Notandi\Documents\SH4\data\cfg\SaveGames in that folder are your saved games open it and you will see five files. Open ActiveUserPlayerUnits.upc and CareerTrack.upc that's were you can change the boats name. Use notepad to view the files.
