(Mis?)colored submarines

I have been playing SH4 for a bit now and I've noticed something, all the (American) subs seem to be colored a charcoal color in game, but I've seen photos of American subs painted almost a Germanic gray silver, is this one of those things they had to leave out because of 'copyright violation" or just laziness on the developers part?

Different paint schemes were used at different periods of the war. At the outbreak, they were painted black. The gray scheme came later. I don't think it matters in the game, though.

yeah, the color doesn't change until like 1943 or 44.
