Default War, Rape and Combating it.

Jolie opposes rape in wartime. I suspect most civilized folks oppose rape during wartime. Jolie believes she needs to jump start the cause in Japan?

Oh, Beijing must be rubbing their hands in glee, they can get a lot of mileage out of this.

Truth be told though, as nationalistic tensions flare in the Far East, little reminders like this are probably not a terrible idea, while Japan doesn't have an offensive military (at this moment in time) ingraining the brutality of the late Shówa period into the youth of Japan and South Korea might help prevent a temptation to glorify the 'old ways'.

I had thought, in recent news, Japan was nonchalant with the raping that took place during WW2. Failure to acknowledge it. Jolie opens it up in Japan proper. Smart or risky move?

I suspect that the Japanese government will ignore the issue, with Shinzo Abe in power with the Liberal Democrat Party, which despite what it sounds like, is more right wing than the UK equivalent. The LDP is a strong force in Japanese politics, it's been in power very frequently since 1948, spending a time from 1955 to 1993 in control. That's like having a whole string of Republican or Democrat presidents for thirty-eight years, a life-time in the world of politics.

Since the bubble burst in the 1990s, Japan has struggled to get back on its feet, social conditions have deteriorated in many parts of the Japanese society, the amount of NEET and Hikikomori have risen, it seems that just as Japan was about to get back on to the straight and level, the 2008 crisis hit the world and plunged it back down again. Times like these fester nationalistic tendancies, which have been seen through the various island clashes around Japan of late. Given Chinas upward rise in military prowness and the decline of American political strength, as well as a rise in the tendancy for American isolationism in its media and populace, I would wager that someone in Japan will very soon put forward the proposal to modify Article Nine of the Japanese Constitution and it will receive rising support from the nationalistic Japanese who see a rising (and vengeful) Communist China as a threat, and it will be welcomed by America and Australia as further weaponry to bring to bear against any Chinese expansions in the Pacific through either trade or force.
I don't know...call me stuck in the 1940s, but the idea of a remilitarised Japan, doesn't sit well with me, I've got no beef against the Japanese, but their mindset does scare me sometimes.

I suspect the "Big Rape" lobby will fight this.
Jolie must have been watching Bruno again.

Sorry, I can't take any "celebrity cause" seriously. I think she should fight hunger on Xenu.

oh wait, that's Tom Cruise's turf.

No. But some say - and afair recently especially in Japan - it is a more or less natural thing in wartime. That's what she opposes.

I think it is absolutly correct for a celebrity to take a noble position to grow publicity for a problem.

Edit: just reading the link in the first posting, I think it has a sour taste to promote her movie in context to the given problem.

Wouldn't it be better to curb armed conflict?
Then you needn't worry about rape during conflict in the first place.

Raping and pillaging have always been bedfellows during armed conflicts since the dawn of time.

No, that would kill the idea pool for the gaming industry.

I second that!

Let's make a law that ensures those who want to go to war have to stand directly in the front line. They have to engage personally until they win or die.
They probably find immediately more peaceful means to end a dispute.

I've been a proponent of this line of thinking ever since I signed up for selective service in 1972.

If you leader wienies want to start throwing down, get your butts out there at the front of the column and take point.

Or even better, just lock the head honchos in a room and whoever comes out alive wins the war.

I'd bet the farm that they would find new and creative ways to settle their differences.
