GWX or Living Silent Humter 3?
I plan on buying SH3 soon but before I do i'm already planning on which mods to use. I have heard good and bad things about both so I figured I would get some advice from the experts.

depends on what you want are you going for realism or shiny graphics?
for realism GWX for graphics LSH3. however both bring alot more to the table. GWX is a subsim favorite and many here use it so more mods are built with its files having the side affect of more mods being compatable with it. |

There are 3 super mods available to SH 3.
Firstly, upgrade your SH 3 to v1.4. Secondly, without any super mods, the stock game is lacking in many facets. Do yourself a favour and read the following links to get an idea of what suits you the best. Remember: Your playstyle will determine what mods you install GWX: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=102096 Living Silent Hunter 3: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=159165 NYGM: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=139231 Without any of the above, SH 3 Stock is a mere hollow shell. Check out the stickys also here in the mods section for useful tips, hints and links for modding SH 3. |

I'm mainly looking for realism. Oh and that NYGM mod looks interesting but I must know how realistic it is.

since you said realistic then i must recommend GWX (for now). i have tried both GWX and NYGM and GWX wins out (no offense steibler if you are reading this). something always seems to be missing with NYGM. however you can play all 3 and decide for yourself using multiSH3 and some here have an install each with a different megamod and occasionaly a stock for backup files.

I don't mean to be disputatious, but I find the release threads really don't tell me much about the supermods. To better find out what they do and what their devs had in mind, I have to look at the user manuals. Fortunately, both GWX and NYGM have good comprehensive manuals that let you get a taste of what the mod is about. GWX: http://wwwnew.filefront.com/13951729/Manual_V3.0.pdf/
NYGM: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...le&id=136. The LSH full manual, AFAIK, is only available in German, but there is a "mini-manual" in English: http://www.lsh3.com/dl/v5/LSH3_V5.1_MiniManual_EN.pdf From my limited experience, with NYGM and GWX, NYGM seems to put more stress on technical accuracy, somewhat at the expense of the sensory experience, while GWX strives for a more balanced effect. But with some excellent additional mods, and, in particular, h.sie's and Stiebler's patches, the two are rather similar. (Example: when you stop when submerged, do you prefer to float up - GWX- or sink -NYGM? Different, but Coke and Pepsi.) To paraphrase the best characterization I've seen: NYGM doesn't have perfect visuals, but it gives you a good, accurate death. I must confess that my German is quite weak, and that consequently I have not tried LSH. I'm sure LSH doesn't require fluency, but it appears to exceed my meager capabilities. I'm sure all three supermods would give you an enjoyable gaming experience. The differences are many but small, and which you prefer will be a matter of personal taste. You really should try them for yourself and pick the one that feels best to you. |

Use multi-SH3 and try them all, but start with unmodified SH3 for a while to learn the game. It is too difficult if you try to learn it with the super mods. For example, the academy is impossible with GWX.

The "float up" feature was removed for GWX3.

On the other hand you only need to pass the Navigation course to get the full 1500 renown. The rest is just practice.

just stay away from the flak gun training and convoy. but as steve said you only have to do the navigation but IIRC GWX you didn't even need to do that. the naval artilary is easy hint AIM AT THE WATERLINE. torpedos can be a little challanging.
