Default SH III and Windows 8

Hello, one and all.
I attempted to install and run Silent Hunter I, the original on Win 8 and realized it was just to dated (the most simple point and click version). It didn't work.

I had SH III and figured that I could run it on Win 8. Windows says that the application can not be run.

Is there a patch or a fix that I need to install or do I need Win 7 ?

Lastly, would it be better to just update to SH 4 or SH 5 ?

Just looking for some helpful hints to get me out of port.

Thanks for any help.

SH3 works fine on Win 8, just do not install it in the default programs file x86.

Default SH3 win 8

I did not install it into the files x86.
I installed it on the D:\ drive under SilentHunterIII

When I try to run the program it pops up a message that reads;

"This application can be launched with a release version of Miscrosoft Windows 95 OSR2.1/98/ME/NT 4.0/2000/XP/ Server 2003 only. "

and won't run...

My apologies for being newby-ish on this but I've been out of the loop on installing and keeping up to date with patches/mods and versions.

I read the forums a bit before posting and saw that there is help with Win 7 but nothing listed for Win 8.

Also, I have the store bought version of SH III from 7 years ago or so, whenever it was released. I just installed from disc and directed it to be installed on the D drive. Nothing but hassles so far.

Let me know what I need to do...
Thanks.

That message you get indicates the starforce - problem. Please read the following and follow the instructions there:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=160118

and you should be fine...

Default Starforce ?

Ok, it just seems like the software company trying to protect itself.

Don't have time this moment to follow all those instructions.
I'll get around to it and let you guys know if I have further problems.

Looks like I have to download and install patches/fixes of some sort and not run the application game until all is done.

I have some work ahead of me to get this thing updated to win 8.

Just wondering if it would just be better to get SH 4 or SH 5 straight away or if that would have the same problems as I'm having now with SH 3. At least with SH 3, I have the map, and user manual in front of me.

Let me know guys.. Thanks.

Well it depends SH5 is system intensive and even more intensive if you use Sobers megamod list. SH4 with the official expansion is halfway decent and you can get your uboat craving all type IX though even better with mods.
