Default Ray Harryhausen passes away

Ray Harryhausen has died at the age of 92

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22441567

An animation legend, I think many of us here will have seen at least one film with his work in. In an era long before computerised animation, his models were flawlessly animated and designed to seque perfectly with human co-actors.

As a big War of the worlds fan, I was interested to find this:

A pity that the film itself never came to fruitition because if anyone could have animated the martians in a believable way in that era, it was Harryhausen.

So, RIP Ray, and thank you for all the creatures big and small.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Such an icon of the films of yesteryear. I'd rather watch his skeletons, et al, than most of the special effects in the two or three decades that followed.

If you ever find yourself near Bradford pop in to the National Media Museum (it may be called something else, but similar) where they've got a whole section dedicated to Ray and his work.

I hope it wasn't just a temp display.

RIP Ray - and at your funeral I want to see some stop motion resurrection action.

I grew up watching his work on big screens and small. A very large part of my childhood was spent awestruck by his creations. If there is one thing to be said about his creations versus today's high tech FX, Harry's animations seemd to have a bit more life to them, a naturalness and credibitlty that high-def FX of today just doesn't seem to touch. When you watch his work, you can readily buy into the "reality" of the scene. Along with George Pal, Harry took the art of stop motion and refined it into a genuine art form. It is notable that Tim Burton has continued the art with his own stop motion films and, in many cases, his animated work is better and more heartfelt than some of his work with live actors. This was also the case with Harry...

The news here in Hollywood is full of news and tributes to his work. There are some people who, when they pass, it is said to be the end of an era: Today is very much and end of an era...

Thanks, Harry, and rest you well...

I'll never forget the skeleton fighting scheme in Jason and the Argonauts.

Another bank holiday weekend in a couple of weeks, hopefully they'll stick Jason, Clash, or Sinbad on the telly. And hope it rains.

I'll just pop along to St James' and watch the fight scenes there.
