Not scoring any hits with torpedoes.

Every torpedo i have fired so far (except for two) has been a dud. I tried "Contact Influence" at a foot or two deeper than the draft. I tried a shallow running "Contact" attack. Both at varying speeds. I am shooting at a direct right angle and on "Contact" they just bounce off. Something is wrong here. Im playing at 75% realism.

Help me figure out what to do!

Are you too near the target? Say less than 400 m?

My last encounter had me at a directly Starboard of the target at about 2500 Yards.

All 6 torpedoes either didnt go off and passed under or bounced off the side harmlessly.

Well some people would suggest avoiding a 90° shot. If you have a "save", replay it but try to put some "angle" in your shot, say plus or minus 15° (or even larger). Or just call it a bad torp batch, do whatever you can with it, return to base and go the next mission and see what happens then.

I am on my fourth patrol as we speak. I have shot all my torpedoes on the last three patrols. I did all kinds of different angles. I am just going to change the "Torpedo Realism" setting to not historical. I am sick of sinking stuff with the deck gun. All but one ship has been with the deck gun and I have probably sank 12 ships...

Are you running any mods? TMO changes the dud probability to historical levels. What you describe sounds historically accurate for early war Mk14s.
From what I understand, the best combination for a successful hit was: Aim so that the torpedo hits at an angle other than 90 degrees, set for contact only, run very shallow, and slow speed. And even that wasn't a big help.

After my last post, I got 4 torpedo hits...Yes i am running TMO. I do not like the dud rate. I think i'll try another patrol at historical settings.

Here is one of my old battle reports concerning duds...

Well......as was mentioned before...the DUD rate was extremely high, I have had patrol's where every single torp was a DUD or a miss.

Yeap, TMO has a lot of duds, and maybe you are firing too close. Good avices there, i can add one more; load the mark 10s until the 14s are fixed by mid 43.

I fire all of my torpedos on the slow speed setting. I keep the range to right around 1500 yards. I use RFB. I only get an occasional dud.

TMO 2.5 and RFB 2.0 both have basically the same torp failure rate, although TMO has proportionately more prematures and RFB proportionaly more duds. Both are based on historical failure rates.

In game terms, pre-july 43, I find using slow speed, contact/influence and less than 90 degree shots seem to produce less duds. YMMV.

I've had very similar experiences like the thread opener and msumpsi's suggestion was what I have done too to solve that. The mark10 torpedoes might have some disadvantages, but (until the named year which is also stated in the TMO readme) they are way more reliable to use. This way it worked pretty well for me without continous frustration but still at 100%-settings.

Armestead:

Hilarious, truly a classic.

It should be required reading for SH4 recruits.

SH 3 veterans think they should make 90 deg. shots because this helps with the german torps, but with early war Mk 14 torps, it will reduce your chances. The more violent impact tended to bend the guide pins in the exploder....thus producing duds. A glancing angle will work better. (at least with RFB.) With magnetic influence detonation, it doesn't matter.
