Hardcore gamers have posted a list of some of the titles not working in windows 8. I see they also say Starforce games don't seem to be working which means the original disc versions of maritime sims such as SH3, Enigma Rising Tide, PT Boats & Virtual Skipper may be off the menu for a while.

I wonder if Steam works? I'm not jumping to 8 yet either.

Been a longtime since I've used a Windows OS but doesn't it have a capability mode which would help with this?

In direct reaction to W8 licensing scheme, Steam has started to develeope its platform becoming Linux compatible.
Read between the lines, and you know what Steam thinks of W8. I see no argument to move W8. From a gamer's POV I must want it to collapse, else it turns Windows into a closed app-store like it is the case with Apple. Not good for gamers and simulation-players. This is also my prime argument to ask people considering to get W8 to get it NOT. It leads the way into a new future, but a future you probably do not want, from a gamer'S POV.

If Steam does this - they are screwing themselves. The linux/WINE market is significantly smaller. They HAVE to stay M$ compatible - or else they not only piss off all their customers that upgrade, but they screw themselves out of their market. They may spread the platform to include linux, but the moment they abandon windows is the moment they sign their "we plan on going bankrupt" notice. No way they don't get Win8 compatible.

Add sleeping dogs to the list, it oddly has some issues with the drivers on certain graphic presets (doesn't work on high, works on medium)

I still don't get this argument, the windows store is added to all the sources for programs that windows 7 had. Understand that in windows 8, you can use a disk, or download from steam (hell, steam works perfectly). If you don't like it, you can simply not use it. Most application programmers I have spoken to welcome the windows store. It takes a MUCH lower cut than traditional sources (aka, best buy takes at least 50%, the windows store takes at most 30%, lowered to 20% if your program does well). And unlike iOS or Andriod, people are more willing to pay more for windows software. From an enterprise IT perspective, the windows store and windows RT applications in general allows even more fine grained centralized control. The sandboxing model that Windows RT introduces allows even more freedom for multiuse systems. And unlike Apple's OS X app store, Microsoft allows each organization to create its own app store, for internal use. Finally, the windows store allows software authors to deliver updates from an integrated source. Much better than the current model, where each program has to check for updates itself. If you would like to enjoy older games, Windows 8 pro even includes the highly excellent Hyper-V hypervisor. I generally see no complaints regarding the Windows RT API, the biggest complaints I hear about is more UI related, or hell, the fact that the new mail program is much worse than outlook. |

![]() ![]() The mail program is so basic, it makes outlook express 6.0 look advanced Hey if you want to get good mail on windows 8, register on outlook.com, and use it to aggregate your mail. Than, pin the tab to the start screen. 10 times better than the built in mail app |

I went to our local mall tonight for supper and after stopped in at the new MS store. I looked and played with 8 for a bit and I do not like it. The pc I was using had both touch screen and mouse/keyboard running. Touch screen was kinda ok, but either way 8 was a PITA. I asked a few questions on gaming they had no idea if gaming was even possible. I told the kid I talking to I was into SH3, 4, and 5 and a couple of Steam games, and he basically said to stay with 7 if you want to do gaming.
It seems MS wants you connected to them all the time to see if you have problems so they can get an idea on what to fix and add. From that I don't think 8 is a finished product just yet. Maybe they've been talking to UBI. LOL I saw only Outlook for email. No hotmail was on the computer I was playing with. And MS' antivirus software is now called Windows Defender. You can upgrade from XP but there's no way to downgrade unless you have the trial version of 8.... IF you can still get it. And that's only good for 30 or 60 days... the kid wasn't sure on the length of time. At the end of the trial time your system reverts to the OS you were previously using. I'm thinking that was the beta version. Not many questions were answered. One was tho. MS is no longer selling OEM Windows 7. You have to get it from a second party like CompUSA, NewEgg, or in a store-bought computer. So if you don't want Windows 8, you better get 7 from somewhere before it's gone. Edit: Actually when I got to thinking about Win 8 after I posted the above, it reminds me of the Vista fiasco. ![]()

Windows 8 is horrid of everything I've seen of it, Windows 7 works fine, thank you very much. Maybe Valve will get the idea of making their own OS so we gamers can leave Windows to the Ipad and smartphone "people".
