Default Newbie questions +

I finially picked up SH 5, last week, via a package thru Steam; and like many I have read on numerous forum threads, am struggling getting use to new controls, etc. I have a two part question here. First.
I struggled greatly w/aiming/shooting/hitting also and started exploring forums, then videos. I finially found a video that I thought I understood, by John Greaney. Now, I am playing the vilnella version, from Steam, with no mods. Basically, the video showed, use ruler to mark a trajectory of the target. Then, use protractor to click on trajectory line, then click on target ship, then click on your sub!!! I watched this video 3-4 times, but when I get back into my game, all is well untill AOB part, when I notice that there IS a port side and a starboard side to my game. AND it seems like something is fishy here. I thought, I know, port is left, starboard is right, BUT, no!!! It's not correct!!! Or am I missing something??? Does port or starboard ,matter here; this wasn't mentioned in video, so I left wondering??? OR, can I assume that the video is with a mod and this problem is fixed??

Now to second part, I have been reading this forum, watching videos and the information is overwelming. I'd like to mod, and I have watched the "how to mod" video and I think I can. But, I'd like a couple-three opinions as to what ones to use with the following guidelines. I'm not to keen on "bells & whistles" , whether water is true ocean color! I want gameplay with some old controls, from 3&4, plus whatever else the communtiy has come up with. Things don't have to be pretty, but I want things like "depth under keel" handier. This depth info is vastly important is this part of the seas, where sometimes the bottom is only 20-30 fathoms!!! I have been playing Sh 3 mostly this week, mainly because it's fresher, since I haven't played in maybe 6-7-8 yrs, and finding this in SH 5 is a chore. It took the video mentioned above, for me to find the attack periscope!!

Anyway, I thank in advance any input from anyone, and hopefully I can get this game sorted out.

1) the port/starboard do matter. Not sure what kind of problem with this you are having though. No bugs that I'm aware of either. Just to be on a safe side: on the dial it is meant port/starboard of the SHIP and not the uboat.
2) Well, you have 2 choices for UI. NewUI by TDW has settings allowing you to set SH3/4 dials and buttons. You also can try CSP MaGUI, which, it seems, has a brand new awesome looking stuff

Default Thanks

Targo thanks, for replay. BUT I am more and more overwelmed by all the information here. I think, I found the "CSP Mag UI" but the link takes one to "mediafire.com" for the download??? Is this correct??? Is this where all the UIs are found??? I haven't found New Ui by TDW, yet.

Now, a second question; I bought this game thru STEAM, and I have seen some other inquires about these mods and STEAM, but no difinitive answer. ARE there any not compatable? Ihave seen some posts about re-installing a clean copy for mod install. Is this par for the course. Also, the search on this forum doesn't seem to be very helpful; then again, maybe I don't know how to put correct search words in.

Thanks,

M. Ney

No, you are correct - the search function of this forum is not the best one. A lost of people (including myself) use google ability to search sites: i.e. "newui site:subsim.com"

Also, if you will look through SH5 Mods Workshop forum, you will find a lot of information on mods.

In regards to locations of the files: the modders place their mods whenever they want. mediafire is one of the locations, but it doesn't mean that ALL of the files are there. Depends on the modder and their prefference at the time of the creation of the mod.

In regards to steam: most of the mods work fine with the Steam version.
What DOES NOT work is the so-called "unnoficial SH5 .exe patch" made by TDW. It fixes a huge amount of vanila problems (i.e. hydrophone is actually WORKING after that patch).

The rest: you'll have to read through the threads of the mods and try
Good luck!

My understanding is that many mods will not work with the Steam verson of SH5, even patched to v1.2. You would have been better off getting the dvd of SH5. Amazon.com would be the best place to get it from these days.

I'm not sure what you're seeing, not having watched the video myself. My first question is, do you understand that AOB is not the angle you see the target at, but the angle he sees you at. If he is approaching from your port side, you are to his starboard, and vice versa. That may be the problem you're having.

@ Marshall Ney

When I installed SH5 for the first time, I spent the first weeks digging the basics of ship's hunting from them following tutorials.

Many of them were written for SHIII/IV, but being based on universal trigonometric laws and on tactics actually used during WWII, they still apply to SH5:

They will help you as well getting used to the therminology and parameter's definitions involved in torpedo solution calculations.

Here they are:

Default Hey thanks guys

Gap, thanks for the "numerous informations". I will endevor to watch & study. Also, Segwin, thanks, that's the clearest explanation I have seen about the port & starboard side questions.

Secondly, I have complained the last couple of days about the interface of CSP Magui because the tool of determing whether one wanted manual or TCP targeting was hiidden & a mystery to me. WELL, solved. I had a situation today where the visability on the water was very clear, so I had to submerge sooner. I got all settings adjusted and thought while I have idle time I'll type this ship exactly(I very seldom have ever used the book to see what I was shooting!! If it was a destroyer, shoot around 2 meters; id it's a cargo or tanker, shoot 2-5 meters and etc. Anyways, I pull out what I thought was the book AND lo-and-behold this is the manual targeting thing-ma-job. Here, is what I had been looking for. AND, I think the modders who made this significant change in the interface, should have dome documentation about it, or have a photo of same. It's been very frustrating, first with the vanilla game, now with this mod, trying to learn the game.

If it wasn't for this forum, and you nice guys, I would have given up!!! But this seems to be par-for-the-course for game makers, and publishers. Leave to the gaming community to figure out.

That's just my opine.

Again thanks all,

MN
