Default Torpedo range and arming distance questions

Dear brothers and sisters,

Situation: May 1941, Type VII-C. Penetrated a large convoy screen and positioned myself nicely within the ranks of merchants, 7 m/s wind and clear skies in daylight (GWX on 82% realism - not important for this question I don't think).

Picked my targets and loosed all 4 bow tubes, immediately looked to see if I could get the aft tube into action as well - finding that my path to the 900ish metre off Medium Cargo was blocked by a Large Cargo crossing my solution at 200m, aft. Couldn't get a shot on that basis and, fearing the escorts, dived away under the pack to hear the satisfying 4 impacts and two big merchants heading down.

Got me thinking - torpedo arm distance is 300m, yes? If so, couple of questions....

i) Could this be reset at sea by the crew, historically?

ii) Is there any way to mod the game to amend this distance in-game?

iii) If it were possible, how far would one have to be to a torpedo blast, historically and in game terms, to risk real damage to the boat? I've been in multiplayer battles over a LAN but don't do so regularly enough to run any tests.

Regards,

KvK

A good article of german WWII torpedoes

http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WTGER_WWII.htm

i) I don't think that was possible in RL.

ii) I don't know

iii) Taking into account a warhead of 300 kg of explosives an arming range less than 300 m would be just fatal to the Uboat.
The blast of the torpedo was able to brake 3000 - 4000 tons ships ,imagine the results on a 700 tons U boot.

1. In real life possibly in a larger boat, but it would take a while as you would have to pull apart the torpedo.
2. Not that i know of maybe in the file
3. Anything under 300 would be probaly fatal. if you dived deep and fast you could avoid a blast from about 250 metres?

i) No. It was there to protect the boat in case of premature detonation.

ii) Not that I'm aware of.

Were you wondering if changing the arming distance could get it to bypass the ship inbetween? I'm afraid it would be of no use. If it hit's the hull of a ship that is in the way, then it is a dud. And not going to reach the desired target.

The eels in game are all 300 metres for arming purposes (as already correctly stated)...the Falke is the exception, 400 metres.
