Back in the deep end - which way is up?

It's been years since I've been around these parts ...

I just finished reading RSR which has rekindled an interest in naval warfare.

I am restoring my Sub Command (vanilla 1.08e and SCXIIc/SCU) and Dangerous Waters (vanilla 1.04 and LWAMI 3.08).

I am patched to DW 1.04. Is there a 1.04b patch somewhere? I saw it mentioned. (I have the UK Blackbean release of DW.)

Well, I see there are lots of mods around for DW these days.

Can someone briefly summarize what is the primary focus of these various mods?

LWAMI 3.11

Alfa Tau 3.1

RA 1.1

DWX 1.1

Is DW 1.04/1.04b playable as is? Or is a mod really needed to fix glaring bugs?
