GWX Gold is what I use, as far as the "major" mods go, it is a wonderful tool.

Best is a relative term. I personally use GWX Gold for the vast, realistic overall gameplay enhancement it provides. I use MaGUI F w/TMT v2 (and some of its optional content) for the GUI and manual targeting. I also use a few select files from Thomsen's sound mod v3.2 to further enhance the immersion. And finally I use SH3 Commander 3.2 (w/GWX cfgs) for the wonderful career files it produces, and use the patrol log editor plug-in to flesh out my logbook

I'd check any of the other recent threads on this topic. There have been some good soup recipes posted.

SUPER MODS
Definately GWX3 gold, with Thompsons Sound Mod, Tried Living SH3 V5.1 Mod, which has some brilliant eye candy in and around harbours and land areas. But reality is not as good as GWX. You need to run a separate install of SH3 patched to 1.4 if you want to try the Living SH3 V5.1 Mod. Tried NYGM Tonnage War as well. But still prefer GWX3 gold, with SH Commander 3.2 (w/GWX cfgs) Geoff

One thing you should look into specifically are the combination mods that have been made, where efforts have been made to incorporate multiple "must have" mods which would otherwise be in conflict with one another into something that can actually work. Most of this is done for GWX Gold. Ace is a guy you want to check out.
Also, if you're using a 64 bit system as many are these days, you should check out a tool that allows you to make SH3 able to ultilize 4 gigs of ram. Right now on a 32 it system, it being an exe designed to funciton as 32 bit, it crashes if you push it near or past 2 gigs of memory usage. Many many of the newest mods together are unusable without this. Lastly, be prepared for a lot of 'balancing'. It takes work to make your own mod soup taste right. Good luck. |
