CTD when loading

I just re-loaded windows and upgraded my ram, which required a reload of SH4. Now the game crashes right after the initial movie when the game loads, before you get to the options screen. How can I trouble shoot this problem?

More info, specs and what version of the game do you have?

I long deleted the movie intro, that could be causing a problem, but can't remember off hand what file, maybe someone will, but you could try that.

Where did you get the game? DVD disk, or downloaded from an internet site?

Version 1.4 is not the latest patch. Version 1.5 is the latest. It only comes when you have the "U-Boat Missions Add-on", or you have the "Gold Edition" of SH4.

Yes, you have to "purchase" the 5th patch for the game to have it current!?!

You are border with most of your PC specs, a lil low with processor speed and my guess is you have onboard sound. Try lowering your video settings, etc.

Try deleting or moving the movie intro...SH4/Data/Movie/Intro.

Make sure you install the version of DX that came with the disk, newer version can cause issues, it won't interfere or erase newer versions if you use those.

Cut off as many programs and background services not needed.

Ending, your specs may be too low, you can still play 1.4 fine.

I have been running SH4 with less ram for years with no problems. then I started to get some crashes after running the game for about an hour, so I recently added a new hard drive and an extra gig of ram, now the game crashes before it even loads. Very frustrating. Having run the game for many years without problems, I know the specs are adequate. If I remember right, the specs were respectable when the game first came out, but I realize they are cosidered outdated now. Joe S

I loaded the latest version, the Gold edition and the game seems to run OK so far, but I havent run any long missions yet. I added my custom sounds like I had before, and so far so good. Then I added my config files from before and the program would not run. The only thing I want to change at this point is I want the Delete key to return the game to normal time compression 1X instead of firing a torpedo, and I want to add the bearing tool on the map. Any suggestions as to how to safely make these changes?
