Cleric Abu Qatada arrested for deportation

Quote:
Radical cleric Abu Qatada has been arrested ahead of fresh deportation proceedings, the Home Office has said.

Home Secretary Theresa May will update MPs on his case on Tuesday afternoon, while he appears before the Special Immigration Appeals Commission.

The European Court of Human Rights blocked his deportation to Jordan in January, saying evidence obtained by torture might be used against him.

Ministers have been seeking assurances from Jordan this will not be the case.

The Home Office had previously said it was making "good progress" in obtaining those guarantees from Jordan, where he faces charges of plotting bomb attacks.

Mrs May travelled to Jordan in March for talks with the king and ministers on the case of the 51-year-old Palestinian-Jordanian, whom ministers have described as "extremely dangerous".

She will make an emergency statement to the Commons on Tuesday about the cleric, who is regarded as a threat to UK national security.A Home Office spokesman said on Tuesday: "UK Border Agency officers have today arrested Abu Qatada and told him that we intend to resume deportation proceedings against him."A British judge had ended Abu Qatada's six-year UK detention in February, weeks after the European Court of Human Rights blocked his deportation.

If only that were so.
Your Home Sec. made a big announcement which sounded good.
She again started a process that may in theory ship him out in a couple of weeks.
He can appeal to the same court he appealed to last time they started the process and that can take a bloody long time.
Since Britain has not appealed against that ruling and it looks like going right back to them the result stands a high chance of being exactly the same as last time.
So in all probability Mays speech is just empty posturing on the floor at westminster.

Why on earth don't they just put him on trial in Britain and then throw the bastard in jail when he is convicted?
It would certainly work out a lot cheaper than this long running fiasco has already.

IIRC the Ero courts didn't say he couldn't be deported but stated he could if guarantees and safeguards where in place. The Brit government believe said guarantees and safeguards have now been assured by Jordan and are therefore attempting to 'fast track' the deportation.

I hope they succeed....better than the Brit taxpayer footing the bill to keep him.

So if you take that as an approach and measure it with.....

Quote:

....asking....."How much has the British taxpayer already paid out in compensation for extraordinary rendition and how many more claims are before the courts that you will obviously have to pay out over?"
....then does it seem a sensible approach?

Would it not have been better to have dealt with it all in the courts as a plain and simple criminal prosecution 6 years ago under the existing laws rather than spend all that time at huge expense trying to make up new laws and fighting through all the courts and parliament over where the new laws dreamt up for this individual fell down as they contradicted existing laws which cover everyone.

Strangely one of those guarantees involves giving immunity from prosecution to some other terrrorists...another victory in the war on terror.

has May with her rush to make a tough sounding speech just opened up the government to a possible charge of wrongful arrest?

Surely after 10 years of screw ups they would have made absolutely sure they got their dates right, or if there was any doubt at all waited till the next day

Perhaps they wanted the headlines on the speech made before the headlines on a former home secretary getting served with papers over his dodgy handling of terrorists .
