Default What would a more accurate ASDIC search range bring?

Just a quick question.First I will say that I have been wondering for awhile if its accurate for DD's to ping me from 90deg port or starboard.Went looking for the actual range sweep of ASDIC and finally found something. This page about sonar states this...

The search pattern

During screening operations the ASDIC operator searched through an arc of roughly 45 degrees each side of the base course of the vessel.

So I ask is this worthwhile to mod to more accurate size?Or maybe the devs made it like this for gameplay reasons? The reason that it most bothers me is that IMO its hard to play the game of minimizing the subs profile if a DD can ping you from such a huge arc.

Hi!

Technically, a real-life sonar beam is only a few degrees wide, but SH3 models it as a broad area search with reduced effectiveness. Also in real life, I think there was a difference between an escort that is "searching for a U-boat without knowing it is there" and "prosecuting an active contact."

The former search sweeps the sonar beam back and forth within +/- 45 degrees of the bow; the latter search tries to keep the U-boat "in the beam" unless it is directly behind the escort.

Hi!

You may want to check out Appendix B in the GWX Manual, as it has some tips for surviving ASW attack.
