Default Falklands War 30th anniversary

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/photos/30-y...333122623.html

Tomorrow marks the start of the war between the UK and Argentina. Operation Rosario was Argentina's plan to recapture the disputed Falkland's.

I've read that apparently the Argentines arrived thinking that they’d be welcomed, and that Britain would let Argentina take over without a fight. They handed out fliers saying: “People of the Malvinas: You have been liberated from the illegal colonial government. The People and Armed Forces of Argentina embrace you as brothers. JOIN US IN FORGING A GREAT FUTURE FOR THE ISLANDS.”

The common soldiers were under a delusion that the islanders were of Argentine descent struggling under the British yoke. They were somewhat chastened to find them speaking English and practicing English customs.

Think of Mrs Thatcher as some of you will but IMHO she was a bit like Churchill.....the right leader at the right time.

Thatcher announces the Falklands invasion to the House of Commons

The only problem with that is that she carries responsibility as leader for the military cutbacks the stripping of citizenship the awarding of the contracts to argentina and the row with those contractors...which were all factors in the dictatorship chancing an invasion in the first place.

And if we did not go to war then hundreds of more people would have gone missing in Argentina under the military junta.

The Election war. Started by a failing dictatorship and opposed by one.

Politics aside, major respect to the soldiers and civilians involved, and prayers to those they left behind. There were acts of incredible bravery on both sides.

Here's a little film from a while back:

Regardless....she acted decisively when the occasion warranted it and in so doing ressurected her political popularity at a time when it was at an all time low.

I've often wondered if the British government had an inkling what the Argentinians were planning and chose to let them act first.

Yes, they did (from accounts on Jeremy Vine's show today), how high in or beyond the Foreign Office it went I don't know, but it was definately known by someone in the UK.

But with her legacy was that a good thing or a bad thing?
