crew renown use?

I searched but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. On the crew management page if you select an individual crewman, besides his attributes that show in the box in the middle, at the lower right side of that box (I belive it's there) there is a renown value for that crewman. I know they get promoted when their expirience goes above their upper value (like 102 for one with 100 - he gets to be promoted) but what is that renown vaule used for? I notice some have none and some have around 20 or 30.
