Default Notes from a full campaign

Shells of Fury full campaign game review.

(Special thanks to Der Schmutt for U-Boote Kurs West!)

Tips: When enemy is sighted, go to logbook for gross registered tonnage (GRT) info. This will let you know if it is worth your time to chase him. Always fire two torpedoes at a warship!

st Patrol: 5 Aug 1914 “Attack the Home Fleet”. Sank two freighters.

nd Patrol: 23 Aug 1914 “Patrol”. Sank a collier and a freighter.

rd Patrol: 16 Sept 1914 “Patrol”. Sank armored cruiser. The other two escaped when I was detected.

th Patrol: 8 Oct 1914 “Support Land Units” Sank a dreadnought in shallow waters. Observed Gneisenau engage two destroyers and sinks one with gunfire but she is hit by a British torpedo and sinks!

th Patrol: 25 Oct 1914 “Securing the coast”. Sank armored cruiser and was promoted to Lt.

th Patrol: 17 Nov 1914 “Diesel sub patrol”. Sank a freighter with gunfire.

th Patrol: 9 Dec 1914 “Patrol”. Sank eight ships.

th Patrol: 4 Jan 1915 “Patrol Baltic Straights”. Missed three destroyers and sank three destroyers.
Let all destroyers pass without attacking them. They are hard to hit anyway. Crash dive!
Don't fire while you or the target are making course or speed changes.

th Patrol: 24 Jan 1915 Sank battlecruiser and three freighters. Rec'd Iron Cross 2nd Class.

th Patrol: 10 Mar 1915 “Unrestricted economic warfare”. Sank five ships, including neutrals. Later, I surfaced too soon and was sunk by coast guard vessel gunfire. Replayed and rec'd Iron Cross 1st Class.

th Patrol: 29 April 1915 “Patrol Scapa Flow and sink warships”. Sank dreadnought.

th Patrol: 24 May 1915 “Economic warfare”. Sank two steamers.

th Patrol: 16 June 1915 “Unexplained losses”. Captain's Log- Held down for 20 hours by aircraft.
Enemy aircraft launched torpedo while I was sitting still at 25 meters. After 24 hours “on the bottom” oxygen is at 70% and two enemy aircraft are circling above. They seem to have unlimited fuel. Now an oil tanker shows up. I let it pass. After 48 hours, I have completed my mission objective of patrolling the area for 48 hours. Oxygen is down to 35% in my diesel powered boat. 50 hours submerged and oxygen is at 17%. Soon we will be forced to surface. At slow speed we have traveled 100+ kilometers and still the English devils hound us! After 72 hours my first officer advises we must surface. We do so at full engine speed. Only one torpedo plane is seen and while it makes dummy runs on us, it does not strafe and we easily shoot it down. Sank three freighters.

Sinking only merchantmen is becoming boring. Like real life, missions don't have enough variety.

th Patrol 10 Aug 1915 “Economic warfare” While chasing a freighter, it shelled me at 3.5 kilometers and sank me. I had forgotten the Brits were now illegally arming freighters in violation of the Hague Convention. Replayed and sank three freighters. Perhaps it was a Q-ship.

th Patrol 20 Sept 1915 “Transfer to the Med” A crew manned deck gun will automatically open fire at 2.5 kilometers and is very accurate in smooth seas and very inaccurate in rough seas. Sank three freighters.

th Patrol 10 Nov 1915 “Patrol the Med” Attack convoy leaving Malta. After 5½ days no convoy sighted and no radio messages. Sank five freighters.

th Patrol 10 Dec 1915 “Attack warships at Cypress” I used the “Q + left mouse click” feature to move to my patrol area. I reappeared in the middle of three destroyers, instantly crash dived and was destroyed by shellfire before I could get under. To be fair, the manual noted this could happen. Replayed and sank a cruiser and an oil tanker.

th Patrol 12 Jan 1916 “Patrol Gallipoli” While I was shelling a freighter, a second vessel appeared on the Tactical Display (lower right hand corner). Before I could identify it in the dusky gloom I was sunk by gunfire. Replayed and sank a freighter.

th Patrol 25 Feb 1916 “Sink tanker convoy mid Med” Used radio messages and successfully tracked and sank six freighters.

st Patrol 26 Mar 1916 “Attack Suez Canal shipping” Sank a freighter.

nd Patrol 27 Apr 1916 “Protect German cruisers by sinking British battleships”. I was spotted and the battleships steamed away. Failed mission.

rd Patrol 26 May 1916 “Attack shipping in Med”. Sank a freighter.

th Patrol 28 June 1916 “Sink shipping off France” Lots of armored cruisers. Sank one cruiser.

th Patrol 24 July 1916 “Sink shipping en route to France” Sank cruiser and promoted to Lt. Cmdr.

th Patrol 17 Aug 1916 “Finishing shot” Mission to sink damaged command ship. Water too shallow to enter. Failed mission.

th Patrol 15 Sept 1916 “Sink tonnage” Attacked by one aircraft with aerial torpedo. No sinkings.

th Patrol 8 Oct 1916 “Attack battleships” Observed Gneisenau sink two destroyers with gunfire. Then, Lion class battlecruiser appeared and my laptop battery died. Replayed. If you heavily damage a battlecruiser, chase it as long as you can. It may suddenly sink. This one sank later and I did not receive credit for it.

th Patrol 2 Nov 1916 “Sink shipping” Sank a ship.

th Patrol 21 Nov 1916 “Sink shipping” Sank a ship.

st Patrol 1 Dec 1916 “Sink shipping” Sank a ship.

nd Patrol 19 Dec 1916 “Sink shipping” Sank another ship.

rd Patrol 9 Jan 1917 “Sink one valuable ship” Water level too low to enter the Thames River. Sank a few ships and failed the mission.

th Patrol 14 Feb 1917 “Unconditional submarine warfare” Sank one freighter.

th Patrol 15 Mar 1917 “Lay mines off Edinburgh” New sub type UC-II

th Patrol 2 April 1917 “Lay mines off Cherbourg”

th Patrol 1 May 1917 “U.S. Enters the war”

th Patrol 15 June 1917 “Mine Iceland” Sank some oil tankers.

th Patrol 30 July 1917 “Destroy fishing fleet” If there was ever a game for testing the tinsel strength of tedium, this is it.

th Patrol 10 Sept 1917 “Sink channel shipping”

st Patrol 26 Oct 1917 “Sink convoy”

nd Patrol 2 Dec 1917 “Bay of Biscay”

rd Patrol 14 Jan 1918 “Sink minelayer” Sank it but it was still listed as an objective. Failed.

th Patrol 8 Mar 1918 “Bay of Biscay”

th Patrol 20 Apr 1918 “Long journey”

th Patrol 6 June 1918 “Bay of Biscay”

th Patrol 1 Sept 1918 “Last chance”

th Patrol 30 Oct 1918 “Protect High Seas Fleet”

th Patrol 30 Oct 1918 “Attack High Seas Fleet” November 4, 1918- Rec'd radio message that the fleet has mutinied, the war is lost, return to base. Remained on patrol in the North Sea . At 1300 hours on November 11, 1918 I sank a British collier with gunfire. No special messages rec'd from game. Returned to base and game ended without any special events. End of war.

As stated in the manual, this game is all about tonnage. Sinking large ships will earn you medals and promotions. I was successful in about 80% of my missions and that fact did not appear to influence medals or promotions very much. However, the missions I failed were important ones because I did not sink the specific ships I had been ordered to sink.
