A night I didn't get a chance to remember....

Cant believe I missed this... one of my favourite maritime movies "A Night to Remember" by far the best movie on the sinking of Titanic, has recently been remastered and was presented by one of the original actors as part of the Glasgow Film festival. Unfortunately I didn't find out about it till the next day, grrr!

Oh well at least the remastered edition is due on bluray next month followed by the airing of the new 4 part itv series Titanic by Julian Fellowes ( ) and the 12 hour BBC Drama Titanic Blood & Steel. Hopefully they will match the standard set by "A Night to Remember" and not be as soapy as James Cameron's "Titanic".

Cool. Two years before A Night To Remember there was a movie called Titanic, with Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwick and a young Robert Wagner. It was just as soapy as Cameron's flick, and indeed the recent version actually stole some lines from the old one. Cameron's movie was great just for the effects. Unfortunately that's not enough to save a stupid plot.

Speaking of A Night To Remember, have you read the book?

Yes, it's a shame Hollywood directors, particularly in recent years, don't seem to get that real world events like the sinking of the Titanic or the capture of the enigma machine in U571 or what happened at Pearl Harbor were dramatic enough without lame embellishment. If anything these movies do a disservice to history and the people who were involved in these important events in their attempt to "broaden the audience for the product".

I have indeed read Walter Lord's great book, and hope to pick up the sequel volume "The night lives on" at some point.

As for James Cameron he should stick to what he's good at... directing and leave writing to real writers.

Funny and embarassing - I have a copy of the sequel that I bought, put on a shelf, put into storage and never read.

Does anyone remember a version of the story with George C. Scott? I think it was origianally made as a mini-series, and only later cobbled together into a movie. I don't recall it as being especially good, but I still liked it for having Scott.
