Default Noob questions

Thank you for being patient with me and my questions. I've got a few more:
  • When I see a target on the map and am working to calculate the intercept angle - if I don't have a radar/sonar aid that gives me the relative bearing - how can I calculate it manually? (Feel dumb asking)?
  • I have entered a name for myself in the "Career" section and have been saving each leg of my initial mission. I play unitl I get tired then save and come back and load the mission. If/when I successfully complete this mission will the game save my name/career? Currently, each time I return it only says "John Doe".

Well, if you don't have SJ (surface search) radar, there are a couple things you can do.

1, try to race in and get a visual on the target, folling him on the map, then once you have an idea of his heading, you can stay out of visual range, and race ahead of the target, and set up a submerged ambush.

2, go to the hydrophone station, and set the hydrophone so you are lined up on the target. Then do a ping to get a target range. Should be one of the buttons on the menu bar.

What I do then, since I play in english measurements, is multiply the range to the target by 3, since it's 3ft to the yard, and divide by 6072 (feet per nautical mile), which gives me the range in miles. Then take your measuring tool on the map screen, and measure out the distance from your boat to the target bearing, which is usually a black line pointing in the direction of the target. Once you habe the measurement, take your black pencil, and leave an "X" at the distance marker you made with the ruler tool.

Give it 10 or 15 minutes, and repeat the process.

Once you have 2 "X" marks on the map, use your measuring tool to make a line going from the 1st marker, through the second one. Make sure to open the green compass tool, as it gives you a 360 degree marked pointer with the ruler tool, and you can make a good estimated course that the target is following.

This is not a guarantee that you will intercept your intended target. They can and do change course, so if you have a long way to travel to outpace the target, make sure to check that he's still heading the same direction every 30 to 45 minutes.

Also, it works best if you can be fully stopped to take your initial readings.

As a side note, one of the first things I do when I fire up the game, is head to the map screen, and open up the compass tool and leave it open. It helps with a few of the tools, like the ruler, and the course plotting tool you use to plot courses on the map with.

Line tool on the map? Most bigger mods provide a reversed compass scale on the mouse cursor to determine true bearing. Or did you mean something else? But knowing the relative bearing isn't enough to intercept it. You need to know speed too:

Sorry, don't have a clue.
