Nope you're reading it right BUT the torpedoes don't, at least in the early war.
They run 10+ feet too deep till about the middle of '43. Not so bad after that. Any time you shoot a DD set them very shallow 3' or less even later in the war. A good hit on a DD will sink it even if its a shallow hit. Also till mid '43 the dud rate is unbelievable, magnetic detonators explode prematurely, contacts don't explode at all half of the time and than there is the running too deep thing. The fixes are; don't use magnetic pistols, use low speed torps and don't shoot with a 90° torpedo impact angle, more like 70°. Although it's kind of fun to shoot DDs its also a very good way to have a very short career. I avoid DDs at all cost unless the payoff is greater than the risk. Magic

And if you run any of the supermods, watch out in the early part of the war for those nasty circle runners!
Set torpedo depth to the shallowest possible level on the dial. To avoid deep runners. Not 100% perfect, but you will only get the occassional too deep runner. Attack destroyers only if you have to, and have them by complete suprize. Unless you're suicidal, especially in the Slot taking on the Tokyo Express. Don't take shots at shallow angles to 90 degrees. Try to hit targets at 30-45 degree angles, as it will help with the dud problem. Again, not 100% perfect, but it does help reduce the problem. There was something along the lines, that the contact mechanism would either break or bend before setting of the warhead if they hit at 90 degrees, so they changed tactics to fire angle shots at targets. And yes, stay away from those darn magnetic detonators! They will frustrate the bejeebers outta you.

The very good advice to avoid the 90 degree shot kinda kills the "Dick O'Kane" technique. But the "Cromwell" technique works well once you get the hang of it. You can learn more about these approach techniques from the stickies Bag o tricks.
Good luck with that.

![]() If you're tired of torpedo problems, you can also get yourself assigned to a S-class boat. The Mk 10 torps are not so big and fast as the Mk 14, but are more reliable. |

Faulty torpedoes - a deep runner, in this case - are a common sight all through the war, less so after 1943.
