Depends on wether you have or have not previous experience with other submarine simulations.

In any case, the golden rule is one step at a time: Try first one platform and do not go to another until you more or less master the previous. If you are for subs, start with the Kilo, it doesn't have towed array and as such simplifies things considerably. If you are a pretending airdale, start with the MH-60 Helicopter. In any case, the Frigate is the most complicated thing around.

Borrow stuff and guides and learn, there are tons of useful things written by some clever guy. At Bill Nichol's web www.subguru.com you can find most of them.

And yeah, as adviced use autocrew in those stations you are not yet comfortable manning yourself.

Overwhelming it can be! That is part of what makes it so fun too. I found that developing a "to do" list can help. For instance I have been playing the mission "Contact Madness" in which there is no weapons engagement, but a thorough practice in detecting & classing targets. Ive been going down a list of tasks. 1st I stream foating wire to get link data 2nd I start putting markers on sensor contacts. 3rd I pick closest contact, find all I can on just that contact, classify & add a solution in TMA before I move to next closest contact. Keeps me very busy..

I, however consider myself very novice, so perhaps others may have a better tasking order.. Seems I read a doc somewhere about tasks you should do in the 1st minute, then the next 5 min. and so on... but I cant find it...

welcome. the learning curve can be daunting.

you could use the autocrew for now yes, but eventually youre going to want to do at least some of it yourself, because its so much more satisfying that way when you are sucessful, IMO.

run quick missions. its a good way to get a feel for the sonar because you arent overwhelmed by contacts. usually a few neutrals and one hostile. watch the tutorial vids (over and over) and always have the user manual ready incase you need to look something up.

from what i gather, the seawolf is the best sub to use for beginners. it can reman quiet at relatively high speeds, and the sonar is much more reliable at those speeds compared to the russian or chinese equivalent.

another good thing about QMs is you can adjust the difficulty according to your skill level, and therefore practice using all the different stations/platforms w/o having to worry too much about getting blown out of the water, on easy and medium anyway.

be sure to use the USNI reference book in the esc menu for info on platforms, sensors, and weapons.

keep practicing. dont be afraid to make mistakes because it is just a game, and thats the primary way to learn. heres some more wisdoms that you may also benefit from...

^ this is real good because it will guide you from a beginner's perspective, while at the same time instructing you on the whys and how comes of ASW, all in a step by step process when combined w/ the attached readme file.

p.s. all downloaded/extracted missions go in the "scenario" folder in your D.W. directory. its that easy.

good luck!

The game is not hard at all well except the FFG(frigate) but you need to have genuine passion towards naval warfare.

I just rediscovered the game myself and installed it again. I played for awhile when I first got it years ago, but less and less mostly because the learning curve was steep, and I could never stay awake long enough to read the whole manual. I always liked the game and the option to control so many different platforms...not just a different sub like in SC, but a ship, plane, or helo was soooo way cool. I knew I'd go back someday and get serious with it, so now is the time.

The best part was I had won my copy of the game with the complete 500 page...yes, it is HUGE!!.. instruction manual signed by the entire Sonalyst team here on the forums....and I never win anything! I didn't even bother checking to see if I won. I got a email from Neal a few weeks after the giveaway was over saying I won one of the three copies being given away, and I needed to claim it now or lose it. ACK!!!

Default First campaign mission (Petropavlosk as 688i)

What gives? I am new to the game but not the genre. I do not know why I am getting "mission can not be completed" messages. What the heck am I supposed to be doing/not doing here?

"Mission cannot be completed" messages usually come when some critical mission parameter is failed. This could be everything from ownship destroyed(you are dead), the ship you are escorting is destroyed or perhaps only that you are counter detected (enemy spots you).

Yeah, I must be getting counter-detected but, damn. I'll keep working at it.
