Default Inkompetenz! - CMBN MP AAR (Crécy vs. Dowly)

Decided to do an AAR from my side, german point of view.

As the title suggests I'm a terrible CMBN player and that's why my so-called tactics and strategies are more amusing than proficient.

Turn 1 (1:00:00-59:00) and Turn 2 (59:00-58:00)

Troops started move on to position. Nothing really happened except for the left flank where 1st platoon got eradicated by unsportsmanlike
US mortars... As I had only three infantry platoons to start with, that put me immediately on defensive stance.

My kindergarten-level plan for troop deployment:

Blue dots are MG positions and red lines are mortar positions. The forest around 3. platoon is actually a hill which offers a great overwatch position. As I have only two infantry platoons, plan is to set up defenses on these two forest areas and just wait for US troops. Although, I have a feeling that Dowly isn't going for an aggressive attack. But we shall see.

The village is the objective so I have to commence an attack at some point. But for now, I try to thin out Dowly's forces with MGs and mortars the best I can. For the inevitable attack I have a panther and a tiger to support, which I think I will keep hidden from him until the time is right...

Turn 3 (58:00-57:00)

Some light mortar fire hit the light flank as well which pretty much disabled the A team of the machinegun platoon's first section.

Left flank

I decided to pull back the forces from the treeline where I intended to place the defenses. It's too obvious place and I'm quite sure the treeline will be a big crater at some point. The troops will stay behind and move on to a defensive position only if US decides to make a move from that side.

Right flank

2. platoon will act as a spearhead for the main attack and so I started to move them on to the far right side of the map to wait for the attack to commence.

Now, prepare for the über hideous plan map...

Both forest areas, where my troops are now, are way too susceptible to artillery strikes. I have lost an mg team and an infantry platoon already so I will definitely be the underdog in this fight. Most likely my only hope for victory is effective use of tanks and mortars.

Plan is to attack from the right side (with 2. platoon) and advance until enemy contact at which point I'll start to move on to the village. Mortars will hammer the suspected enemy positions first and after that 2. platoon advances with the support of a panther. Meanwhile, I hope I will lure Dowly to attack my right flank through my left flank. Keeping the left flank units hidden, hopefully Dowly underestimates my forces there. But the final plan will be refined after I'll have some information of the enemy positions and intentions.

Silly plan but that's the best I came up with.

Turn 4 (57:00-56:00)
Quiet turn.

M10 was spotted on the far side hill's treeline.

Scouts moving toward the city on the left flank.

Turn 5 (56:00-55:00)

Scouts and forward observes moving on on the right flank.

An MG position on the fight flank.

Movement is spotted on the junction. US troops are going for the city.

Forward observers making their way to the two story building for a better view.

Left flank MG position.

Tiger hidden behind the hill on the left side.

Terrible discovery is made while searching for survivors among mortar fire casualties. The commander is dead.

Turn 6 (55:00-54:00)

More enemy movement is spotted. Scouts also spot movement on the right flank close to the city. US troops advance more boldly than I expected.

Right flank MG received orders to fire only if the enemy crosses the road.

Turns 7-10 (54:00-50:00)

Nothing major happened. Left flank scouts took a few mortar rounds and small arms fire. Resulting in loss of one of the scouts. Heavy enemy movement is spotted on the right flank forests on the edge of the town.

Turn 11 (50:00-49:00)

Forward observers are spotted by the enemy and immediate mortar fire begins. After that I made a decision to prepare launching an attack on the right flank. Prior to that forward observers called in mortar strikes on the following locations:

The round circle is harassing fire as enemy mortars were spotted in the area. The line indicates the area where 120mm's will hit. ETA for bombardment 5-6mins.

Turns 12-13 (49:00-47:00)

As suspected, a few rounds hit near the left flank forests. I withdrew the only unit which still was positioned in the treeline. Now all left flank troops have fell back from the danger zone.

Turn 14 (47:00-46:00)

I brought two mortars from the left flank to provide support for the attacking troops on the right side.

Turn 15 (46:00-45:00)

Forests close to the edge of the city on the right side are full of US troops.

First rounds hit the ground.

Forward observers are pinned down by US troops.

Mortars on the right side are brought to position.

Mortars on the left are almost ready to kick some american butt.

Turns 16-17 (45:00-43:00)

Forward observer team is killed. Enemy advances to the forest nearby my right flank positions, killing two men from my mortar team. My MG answers to the fire.

120mm's and on-map 81mm's started to pound American positions.

Overall situation on the right flank.

Turns 18-25 (43:00-36:00)

I managed to lose all screenshots from this period. I have no idea how. Anyway, my mortars bombarded heavily the forests on the right side and I believe Allies suffered heavy casualties. I also launched a platoon sized attack.

Which I try to demonstrate in this utterly abominable picture.

Attack went quite well. I only suffered two casualties. Enemy retreated to the forests where you see four long, red, enemy position markers. I continued to bombard these positions with on-map mortars. I also ordered an off-map 120mm mortars to hit that position.

My panther sits on that red x. I will only bring it in when my attack halts and enemy counterattacks.

After my mortars on the left flank had been firing for a couple of minutes, I pulled them back as I suspected that enemy had already pinpointed them. Well, three seconds after one of the teams started to pull back, a mortar shell hits the exact place where my team was three seconds ago in position... Talk about luck! I had a great picture of that but it vanished somewhere.

Also, my scout on the left flank was killed at point-blank range. It seems Dowly is trying to flank my forces in the right, which is exactly what I wanted. I'm going to see how things move on and then start planning to counterflank the flanking US troops with my left side troops.

Turns 24-26 (36:00-33:00)

Dowly moves a sherman and an M10 to the city.

Sherman opens fire at the house I have my MG in. The results are disastrous.

Two minutes later only man comes out alive.

US forces seem to have advanced to the left flank forests.

A few seconds later a rifleman is spotted in those woods. A second later shooting starts.

The attack on the right flank is stopped by Allied forces which have been successful at inflicting casualties to germans. This means that I have start preparing my move on the left flank and it starts with flushing out US troops out of that left side forest and then the attack to the town shall be launched.

Turns 27-28 (33:00-31:00)

The sherman was causing too much damage so I decided to make somewhat reckless move: charge Panther in to the town and take the sherman out.

Well, panther's commander decided that enemy infantry in a building was a bigger threat so he decided to shoot the building.

Fair enough, it took out a few American troops. However, it resulted in this:

As panther had to reload, sherman managed to fire first. I've no idea how that damn matchbox managed to take out panther's main gun. After the main gun became useless, the panther's commander made the smartest move a tank commander can make in that situation: he turned the tower so sherman's next shot penetrated the armor and voilà, panther was taken out.

Left flank

Random small arms fire in the forest. Also shelled the enemy with mortars. Started to move troops on to position to prepare for the attack.

Right flank

Besides that awful incompetence I exercised, nothing really happened.

Turn 29 (31:00-30:00)

Turn 29 started and once I heard an engine roaring which shouldn't roar, I knew immediately what happened and why. I forgot to delete a move order.

At this point I tried to remember where I ordered that thing to move and I hoped that I just moved it forward (which I apparently completely forgot) just a bit so the tiger would be ready to support the attack. Well, that wasn't the case and at this point:

My reaction was basically this:

At this point I silently accepted the fact.

Once the tiger ran into enemy troops, I thanked myself that I had assigned the target arc to half a meter.

This guy got ran over by the tiger but miraculously survived.

Finally the tank stopped in the middle of that field.

Turns 30-33 (30:00-27:00)

Overall situation.

Americans on the left side forest under heavy fire:

German mortar avenged the actions of their American colleagues by blowing up an already surrendered soldier.

A minor attack is launched (The attacking squads were quickly taken out by US troops.)

An M-10 is spotted in the town. However, fortunately, it doesn't have a visual on the tiger.

On the right flank nothing is happening. A few shots here and there but nothing else. Currently, Dowly virtually controls the whole objective town. On the right flank I can't do anything anymore, except defend the small are which I've obtained within the objective area. On the left flank, I've one shot at trying to breach the defenses and enter the town. But, Dowly has a sherman and an M-10 at the area and apparently most of his troops are positioned there. I have one platoon, two mgs and a tiger. It's a suicide but I must try it. All in all, I've most likely lost the game. But that shouldn't surprise anyone.

In this situation I think I would blame it all on that Panther commander and have him shot and then sent to the East.

Shot and THEN sent to the East, just to show those idiots on the East what not to do

Turns 34-40 (27:00-20:00)

Luckily Dowly didn't manage to take out my Tiger so I had time to pull it back. Relatively little happened over those turns. Nothing really worthy of mentioning.

US troops retreats from the left side forests and starts to pound it with mortars causing terrible casualties.

Left flank troops getting ready for the attack which will be launched after the 81mm mortars bombard the enemy positions.

Turns 41-42 (20:00-18:00)

The attack commences and troops advances to a forest near the edge of the town, taking only minor casualties on the way.

Tiger spots an enemy M-10 which is quickly knocked out.

Meanwhile my troops starts moving towards the town. They encounter heavy resistance.

Troops on the left flank manage to reach the first buildings. On the right flank my scarce troops are taking heavy fire from the allies and apparently the allies have launched a last attack to collapse my right flank.
