Denmark introduces world's first food fat tax
Denmark has introduced what is believed to be the world's first fat tax - a surcharge on foods that are high in saturated fat.
Butter, milk, cheese, pizza, meat, oil and processed food are now subject to the tax if they contain more than 2.3% saturated fat. Some consumers began hoarding to beat the price rise, while some producers call the tax a bureaucratic nightmare. Others suggest that many Danes will simply start shopping abroad. Danish officials say they hope the new tax will help limit the population's intake of fatty foods. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-15137948 Note: 1 October 2011 Last updated at 16:33 GMT

The danes, knows that it's just an another excuse to pull more money out of their pocket.
Some say it's to pay for the foreigner Some say it's for paying for the world biggest authorities( I can't find the english name for it) It's not to get people to eat less fat. Markus

It's a known fact that fat related diseases cost nations billions in healthcare and loss of productivity...
It's also a known fact that such ''health related'' taxes are never spent on health related sectors |

Being able to eat right, is unfortunately a class issue, in many cases, therefore, it costs money for the person ... to have this capability, and as everyone knows, this is not obvious in many countries.

Fat cheese will do as well. You want to eat healthy outdoor then you may have to pay more. Government is putting people on diet by rising food prices? Sound like China. |

![]() In Germany we still have the myth of high taxation in Scandinavia. While it was true during the 70s (Astrid Lindgren's Pomperipossa in Monismania is the most famous example ![]() While we pay the same, in comparison we get less service for our money , so Scandinavia has more "bang for the buck". In addition comes the infamous "friendlyness" of our civil servants (Beamte in German) who have the attitude to treat people like peasants and not like fellow citizens. I haven't been in much contact with Danish or Swedish authorities, but when I was I always nearly cried: "Wow, it is possible that they try to help you rather than seeing you as a disturbance" |
