Default Strange AI behavior

I play GWX Gold.

I hit a small convoy wsw of Freetown. Sent a troop ship and modern tanker to the bottom. The lone escort, a Fletcher class, tried to pound me with sonar and wasserbombs for a time, while the remaining large merchant and medium cargo zigged and zagged along their course.

After the requisite 30 minutes, the escort sailed to rejoin his mates. His mates, however, had started making 180 degree zig-zags, essentially holding position waiting for him.

Ok, we're near the continental shelf. I was expecting the convoy to despawn anyway.

When the Fletcher caught up with them, they started sailing in a tight circle!

If it had been night, I may have tried to sneak in and get a close-up shot off, but it was 1330, clear skies, 15m/s wind and the Fletcher had radar.

Anyone seen that before?

The captains must have been cowboys, and were circling the wagons.

Sounds as if you have sunk the leader ship and the rest of the ships has lost their waypoints, so they continue circling..

You're on stock SH3 right ?

I'm not sure what happens if a convoy lose a leader ship on which the whole convoy route is set by waypoints ? Somebody from GWX dev should answer you.

The convoy upon losing their leader would have the next in line take over that status and carry on their merry way but it has been known for the convoy to lose its waypoints on occasion.

You run the risk of the same happening should you save submerged within rendering range of a harbour....scripted vessels can be seen ramming jetty walls and running themselves aground.
