Swedish navy investigates submarine sighting outside Gothenburg

A foreign submarine may have been sighted in the waters west of the Port of Gothenburg. The information is said to come from a credible source and is now being investigated by the Swedish navy.

Several marine units were already in the area to take part in an excercise and are now participating in the search. One of the areas of interest is located near the islands Öckerö and Hönö.

- The area is heavily trafficked and that's why it is important that we inform of our activities, says the marine inspector Jan Törnqvist in a statement.

The Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten) does not reveal any more information right now.

- At this stage we do not want to comment on the observation at all, says Jan Törnqvist.

- We receive reports regularly that we have to analyse before we can say anything more.
