Rick Perry under fire on Republican debate debut

Rick Perry: "Anyone that is involved in the status quo with regards to social security today is involved in a monstrous lie to our kids and it's not right"

Rivals for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012 have faced off in a debate at the Reagan Presidential Library in California.

Texas Governor Rick Perry, new to the debate cast, sparred with ex-Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney over their records on job-creation.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann reprised her belief that President Obama's healthcare policy was a "job-killer".

And Mr Perry called the US pension pot, Social Security, a "ponzi scheme".

As well as the three leading contenders, former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, businessman Herman Cain, Congressman Ron Paul, former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich and ex-Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum also took part.

The debate is one of three scheduled in the coming weeks, and analysts say the Republican field is likely to thin out in the coming months. The 2012 primary season is not expected to begin until February.

But neither Social Security nor being mildly over-optimistic about your stock picks is a “Ponzi scheme.” A Ponzi scheme is a fraud where in the end the whole pyramid goes bust a bunch of people wind up with no money at all. The absolute only reason Social Security could ever go bust like that would be if elected officials decided they wanted to stop paying benefits.
The more I see of Perry, the less I like.

Watched it. Saw nothing that would inspire me to vote for any of them.

I hope the GOP can get a good story going. They need it.

I dont think i could bring myself to vote for anyone this election.

Obama has just kinda.....sat there. i dont see us going anywhere with him again. But if for whatever reason i was forced into a decision, id gladly vote for obama over any of these nutjobs.

I cant ponder how low perry could sink us into the ground. Bachman has no chance, but its scary to think how fast she could destroy any ground we've gained.

Yeap, at this rate it honestly looks to me like Obama has his 2nd term in the bag. Which is a shame because he's not done much of anything to deserve it.

But that is so much the usual state of affairs in American politics. A great many presidents got a second term simply because the opposition couldn't come up with anyone better. Of course several one-term presidents were replaced by someone equally as bad, so it evens out. Everyone rises to their own level of mediocrity.

I honestly wish we had a similar political system in the UK...two parliamentary terms and your out.

In some cases one

Hey! where is all the wailing about "conspiracy" from you guys?

I like Perry, he'll make a great Republican. And a typical Rep. President.

They Messed With Texas!

A funny thing happened at the Republican debate at the Reagan Library in California on Wednesday night, when the evening’s co-moderator Brian Williams asked a question of Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. (Not funny ha-ha, funny peculiar.) Let’s go right to the video.

Absolutely disgusting. 10 seconds of research on the death penalty shows that innocent people have died because of it. And the son of a...working lady....knew that and still sent people to their death. And these animals applaud it.
