Republicans Against Science!

Jon Huntsman Jr., a former Utah governor and ambassador to China, isn’t a serious contender for the Republican presidential nomination. And that’s too bad, because Mr. Hunstman has been willing to say the unsayable about the G.O.P. — namely, that it is becoming the “anti-science party.” This is an enormously important development. And it should terrify us.

To see what Mr. Huntsman means, consider recent statements by the two men who actually are serious contenders for the G.O.P. nomination: Rick Perry and Mitt Romney.

Mr. Perry, the governor of Texas, recently made headlines by dismissing evolution as “just a theory,” one that has “got some gaps in it” — an observation that will come as news to the vast majority of biologists. But what really got peoples’ attention was what he said about climate change: “I think there are a substantial number of scientists who have manipulated data so that they will have dollars rolling into their projects. And I think we are seeing almost weekly, or even daily, scientists are coming forward and questioning the original idea that man-made global warming is what is causing the climate to change.”

That’s a remarkable statement — or maybe the right adjective is “vile.”

The second part of Mr. Perry’s statement is, as it happens, just false: the scientific consensus about man-made global warming — which includes 97 percent to 98 percent of researchers in the field, according to the National Academy of Sciences — is getting stronger, not weaker, as the evidence for climate change just keeps mounting.

Sadly, the GOP frontrunners are fundy believers.

Romney has problems with science, but believes the Lord appeared to Smith as a piller of light in the woods in the 1800's and that an angel led him to a hillside where he found a buried book written on golden plates that only he could translate, wala, the book of Mormon.

Perry, just an idiot........

I find it amusing that Rick Perry rejects the idea that humans can affect the climate, but he held a rain dance in April.

I hope that the flexibility is high since this will be necessary in development issues, among them "elected representatives".

Wait, so a politician tells us that, "scientists [are] manipulating data to put money in their pockets" like it's a bad thing? I'm cornfuzzled.

Science is science. I hate how it's become some partisan political subject.

The first part of Perry's statement is laughable and shows a remarkable lack of scientific knowledge.

The second part is dead on accurate.

You may want to rethink posting anything from the NY Times, let alone an article by the fellow who seriously advocated faking an alien invasion to stimulate the US economy.

This is not ALL Republicans!!! Somehow the religious nuts have zoomed to the front, guess we can thank the ignorant religious types in the party.Huntsman is not even a real Republican or Conservative, would hate to see him even close to the oval office, just a fraud.

Ron Paul should be the face but he is just too sane and intelligent of a candidate it seems.

Having said that, Obama is just as nutty as them.Obama's well documented partnership with various far left radicals over the years says it all in addition to his blind left wing policies which have done nothing but fail for going on 3 years now.

Sadly next election will prob be between a hick nut like Perry or a disgusting left winger like obama.Think I'll just write in Paul or vote for someone else.I think this time would be great a serious Independent to jump in, would be nice if this election were the first time someone other than the R or D won.

Dang, you made me look. And it's Krugman, so I have to agree with you.

Note that Krugman is not seriously advocating that, but he is seriously advocating the need for government to do something to get people to let them raise taxes even more, which in my book makes him the enemy of every free person.

I keep telling you guys not to expect an unbiased or fair report about the Republicans from the NYT. You might as well try to get a straight story from the Democrat party propaganda ministry. Ain't gonna happen.
