Default Opinions Please

I hit a small sized merchant (5000 tons) last nite just at the forward craine which is my favorite first strike spot. It didnt go down. It slowed down to about 1 or 2 kts, and its decks were dipping under the ruff seas but after an hour, it was still putt'n along. My question is: How long do you guys wait before pump'n another eel into her ?

It depends on the situation. If it is safe to hang around waiting for her to sink, I have waited for as long as 3 - 4 hours (game time) for a ship to sink. If the weather allows, I use the deck gun to finish her off if she doesn't sink in time. If not, and I am in a rush or think she won't sink, I use a second torpedo, but in a different spot on the target.

In rough weather, there's a good chance she'll sink eventually on her own.

Default easy pick'ns

The weather was : Clear and 15m/s. Not too bad. Deck gun wasn't an option. I just didn't hit the sweet spot with the 1st eel. Not any activity around neither. I gave her enough time to sink on her own, but not'a. So a 2nd eel did the trick. I used a stern torpedo since she was easy pick'ns.

I agree with GoDeep. I would have preferred to wait for an opportunity to use the deck gun, as it probably wouldn't take many rounds to finish it off.

Using another eel is probably the safer bet though, as it could have been signaling for assistance.

That's what stern tube is used for. Never found it useful against a moving target, save few exceptions though.

I just babysat a M20b that i torpedoed 4 times to make sure i got the credit for the sinking ( I was out of Torpedoes) It took 19.5 game hours to sink. So I guess damaged boats that are dead in the water might be worth waiting awhile for if you are bingo ammo.

Or you might just ram it. Worked for me some time ago. I just pushed unter the water and it sunk. Not the traditional art of war but useful if you are out of ammo.

Depends on the tactical situation. Are there other ships around? Am I late for an important date with a hot convoy? How's my loadout? A lot of factors come into play.

Generally speaking, if things are fairly calm, (and I've got time to kill waiting for another juicy target to sail by), I'll keep in close proximity and let the flooding and fire run their course.

If on the other hand, time is a pressing concern, then I'll try to finish her quickly with the deck and/or AA guns (if possible).

Again, (generally speaking), if she's 5000 tons or less I don't like to use a second eel on her unless I absolutely have to.

If the deck is going down the waves I'd give it some more time. Sometimes it takes a bit longer for them to go down than just one hour. The deeper the hole comes below the waterlevel, the faster it is supposed to flood.

Agreed....but each to their own I suppose.

If you're going to wait around, consider maintaining periscope depth for atleast the first hour - just so you can monitor the hydrophones incoming DD's.

IIRC, SHIII will send any enemy assets (air or sea) that are within 1hr. of the sinking to investigate

I'm afraid that is not the case.....assets will only be sent if summoned and there are a few additional determining factors to be met before the aforementioned takes place.

I completely agree with what Fish in the Water said. If you dont have any other reports or contacts to chase, just hang around and surface at night to refresh your air if you have to.

In early war, and in all but poor visibility - and if I cannot deck gun it -- I will happily wait 12-18 game hours. I stand off 3000-4000 meters, submerged if by day.

That said, if it's not going down in 12 hours, it probably needs another torpedo. Chalk it up and move on.

In poor visibility, or later in the war, or in an area where waiting around is just not possible, I'll give it a second punch right away. There's no economy in waiting around in those conditions.

I assume Doolar Semler has Gwx installed. I think some of you who think they know GWX pretty well Better look at Jimbunas Signature.

He wae part of the Team that BUILT GWX.

I know some of you are very knowledgeable with GWX and it's files but, he's the one most go to when haveing a problem or,want a mod "Like Deck gun use in 15ms rain" and they have problem fixed just about then and there or shows where the file block with path are and includes the file changed to copy & paste in in next quick post.

Wit all due respect to you all. Nobody is going to convince me they know more than Jim but, Jim himself.

Due to his modesty he'll say different just to cut down being swamped with questions and pm's. "Sorry Jim" But Myself and many others know different. By our dozens and dozens of posts asking for help over the years.

Just a friendly heads up about this Exceptional member who is now a retired GWX Team Member who never uses it to win dicussions as with all other great and helpfull retired GWX Team Members I might add.

I'll shut my BIG mouth now. And I think the best thoughts of all SubSim members and all the good things they add to SubSim.

I salute you all.
