IBM produces first 'brain chips'
IBM has developed a microprocessor which it claims comes closer than ever to replicating the human brain.
The system is capable of "rewiring" its connections as it encounters new information, similar to the way biological synapses work. Researchers believe that that by replicating that feature, the technology could start to learn. Cognitive computers may eventually be used for understanding human behaviour as well as environmental monitoring. ![]() IBM's processors replicate the system of synaptic connections found in the human brain. Dharmendra Modha, IBM's project leader, explained that they were trying to recreate aspects of the mind such as emotion, perception, sensation and cognition by "reverse engineering the brain." The SyNAPSE system uses two prototype "neurosynaptic computing chips". Both have 256 computational cores, which the scientists described as the electronic equivalent of neurons. One chip has 262,144 programmable synapses, while the other contains 65,536 learning synapses. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14574747 Note: 18 August 2011 Last updated at 13:49 GMT

More than 20 viewers, and it could mean that 20 has a chip installed already, which explains in part the action takes place as in "Westworld" which robotic taken to apply ... but no answers,

All just add this colo(u)r commentary: So, since the chip mimics the human brain, does they male chip think about sex non stop and the female chip think about shopping non stop? ![]()

So many questions....
How do you teach it the difference between good and evil? Will it be "born" with instincts? How do you teach it to learn in the first place? The most important thing we learn (and some don't ever learn it) is how to learn. How to take the sum of our experiences and knowledge and put them to the best use. In this learning process, we make mistakes. How do you tell it to recognize a mistake? So many questions.... |

An intersting book to read on the matter of "artifcial intelligence" is:
Final Jeopardy : man vs. machine and the quest to know everything by Stephen Baker It recounts the story behind the creation of "Watson", the IBM computer project to build a computer system to compete aginst the very top players on the U.S. televison quiz show "Jeopardy". The challenges faced by the IBM team to build the software/hardware is indeed very telling in how far we really are from creating a truly "intelligent" coumpter... Oh, btw, "Watson" won the tournament... (Excuse me, Skynet is calling...) |

They're probably interested in implanting them into their project managers brains. Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting the common IBM PM knows why

There are certainly those who like to switch to a chip ... if they believe it is necessary,

A computer capable of learning I might be able to stomach.
One that can learn... and feel emotion? *shudder*
