It seems to be possible:

Getting it to run will probably be no walk in the park, so better be ready to ask advice from some Linux support forum. I'm sure there will be lots of people who'll help you out, if need be, but it does seem like most people in this forum use Windows.

If I was any younger I would probably be trying to use Linux as well, but as most of my PC time is now on spent gaming, I don't have the energy to learn the stuff I would need to know to get the games working - for me it's enough of a hassle trying to get games like SH3 or Il-2 working in Windows 7 I hope you get the game working in Linux

Thanks Sublynx, As soon as Linux sorts out its compatability issues with windows software, its gonna eat Microsoft for brekkie (well maybe not but theyre worried ) Its Quicker, slicker, better looking, no viruses. Im converted, i may get hold of a cheap PC just for SH3 though cos i really dont want to go back to windows.

I used to be a Linux fan, ran three different OSs, then realized:
unfortunately, if Linus had anything to offer that was a real threat to windows,
It would have been out by now
But! If I recall, I ran into someone recently who runs SH3 on wine, lemme dig around tomorrow and see if I can't find them
Hang in there, bro!

Surprisingly, I found that stock SH3 ran fine under Wine, right out of the box - no futzung about required. Also no problem with the NYGM super mod, but no way with GWX (or the bigger mods like MFM or the animated sub-pens).

Ran as fast as it did on the WinXP side of my box, but graphics were not as good due to limited support for the drivers under Wine. Main graphics problem was that smoke/fire/spray did not show up under some circumstances. I understand there's a fix for that if you custom-compile Wine.

Your disk won't be writable (or even a Linux file-system) so you won't be able to change attributes.

If you look at autorun.inf (a text file) it will tell you what file autorun wants to execute, just run that file directly for the same result. executing a Win32 command on my distro (Slackware 13) automatically passes that command off to Wine. Can't say how it's done in Mint.

Also, I was running the version of SHIII under linux that I had already installed on my Windows partition. I didn't try to install it under Linux. winehq (Sublynx's link above) is the go-to place for advice and accounts.

I guess I'll revise my assessment from "no futzing about" to "some futzing about, but not much - for Linux".
