Default Where to begin...

Hey everyone! I decided to finally make a post here...

I've been going to this forum for the past few years, looking through it to find answers to questions I'd think of playing SH III and SH IV (everything from "was this historically possible" to "what boat is best for what situation" or "I seem to have run out of fuel...") and looking up fixes to more technical issues (like getting SH III to run on Vista). I played both games stock (SH III since 2006 or 7 i think and I got SH IV as a Christmas gift in late 2007, and I bought the U-boat missions upgrade several months later i think) for a few years. My first download (and also when I first made an account for this site) was the GWX mod and SH3 Commander program as well as the JSGME installer back in late 2009 or early 2010. Talk about an upgrade! Loved every bit of it (especially the post-patrol report that told you what all the ships were carrying and what their names were). A couple weeks ago I downloaded and installed the TMO 2.1 Mod for SH4 and, apart from some technical problems (but this isn't the time or section for that!) it is equally as exciting insofar as upgrading the game (my favorite bit of the mod is the "curvature of the Earth" effect, where you see the smoke trails of convoys over the horizon before you actually see the ships. I had read about this in a few submarine memoirs, but to see it in the game was pretty neat).

My first experience with the series was when my grandpa got the first Silent Hunter for his Win95 computer. We both loved it (he liked the gameplay and realistic careers. I liked turning on unlimited ammo and invincibility, grabbing a narwhal, and beating the Yamato in a deck gun battle. I was 7! What do you expect?!) I still have the disc, and with help from a DOS emulator, I still occasionally pop it in and... well... turn on god mode and go torpedo every port marked as "Large Naval Base"...

These games really sparked an interest in submarines for me. I have been to the USS Pampanito in San Francisco as well as the USS.. um... (quickly checks Wikipedia) Bowfin. I want to go to Laboe and Kiel to go look at the VII and XXI U-Boats they have there (maybe also that cold war era U-boat, I forget the name...) and also the Typ IX that's in Chicago I think? I never had any family in the Navy or Kriegsmarine (though my grandma's cousin landed on Omaha, while my other grandma's brother was captured in Dieppe by the British in '44) so I've been pretty independent in researching submarines and how they worked during WWII (Now I'm looking at some of the cold war era subs, as well as some WWI subs). This seems to have had some minor effect on me. For example, when one of my roommates asks me for help with something, there's a 50/50 chance I'll answer with "Jawohl Herr Kaleun!" or when I hear propeller aircraft I instinctively look up to double check their bearing and make sure I'm not about to get strafed...

Anyways, there's my life story as far as SH goes, hope it was a good read. Like I mentioned, I'll probably be posting again pretty soon, looking for an answer to this TMO bug (it's annoying, but not a game-breaker, so we'll see...)

Bon Voyage! (cheesy, I know, but I couldn't resist.)

Welcome aboard.

I've been on U-505 in Chicago as well; you are correct, it's a Type IX. That was before I really caught the U-boat fever and I wish I could go back, I'd have a much better understanding now of what I was looking at. Still, it was pretty awesome being able to get that up close and personal with such an amazing bit of history.

Highly likely.
