Default Stalker Series Bundle 9 bucks on steam

Never played it, but I'm a big shooter/RPG fan... as most of you know.

Played Deus Ex, Fallout 3, loved them...

Also love scary games, and just pure shooters. Well I just love games anyways. Play them all.

Question is should I pick them up? Hard to beat the price but Shadow IS dated... and buggy from what I've read. What is the open world enviroment like? How much of it is survivor, and how much is it over powered military shooter with 'rpg' elements?

I personally would say get them, they're very open and not your typical run and gun. Attacking the military right off the bat will most likely get you killed.

If you do decide to get the games, get the complete mods as they fix a lot.

Mods make everything better! In this case, indeed get the Complete mods, or one of the other big packages.

The stalker games are definitely not a typical shooter. Survival is a much bigger element than anything else.

There are sections in the game where it goes into a more linear shooter - for example the 'dungeons' you have to go through to advance the story, and then the last section of the game (which is a pretty frantic but mostly linear experience). Those sections of the game are, well, not that good. It's just not a game designed for it. It's also not great as RPGs go - it won't compare to Fallout 3 in terms of quest structure and the ability to be "good" or "bad", and alter the game's story significantly; there is also not much memorable about writing and characters in the game. However 90% of your time in this game will be spent simply surviving, scavenging for weapons and supplies, dodging military patrols, etc. etc. The main "character" of the game isn't any person in it, but The Zone itself - if you like atmospheric environments more than interesting script, you will be very pleased. You will not enjoy the game that much if you just want to complete the main story and be finished as quickly as possible. You will definitely not get a complete experience out of it without some mods. But otherwise, if you like survival and can tolerate some rough edges in the game mechanics, you'll like this. It offers tough enemies, decent (and even pretty good) enemy AI, good modeling of weapons, and lots of other dangers.

It takes a while to get used to the game though, because it falls in that uncomfortable zone where it's not really an outstanding FPS and it's not really an outstanding RPG. If you expect it to be either of those things, you'll have to really work to get over those expectations. But if you overlook those and just focus on atmosphere and survival, you will like it.

Played through all of original Stalker 3 times, mostly with mods. Every once in a while I honestly want to go back and do it again. Not many - if any - games that I can say that about.

For 9 bucks, just buy it. I play Stalker when I want a break from SH and all three of them are great games and heavily modded.

SoC Starter Pack:

CS Starter Pack:
www.megaupload.com/?d=6W1WKKRS

CoP Starter Pack:
www.megaupload.com/?d=DZMPMTL0

These contain pretty much all the basic recommended first-timer mods:
-Zone Reclamation Project
-Sky Reclamation Project
-latest Absolute Natures & Structures
-SWO 2.22 & latest AtmosFears
-Shaders MAX ...
They also come with FOV Switcher 1.7 (works for all 3), 1.0004 patch (for SoC), 1.5.10 patch (for CS), ATM Sleeping Bag (for CS), and compilation that mixes the pistol-ironsights and +10% accuracy mods for SRP (CS).

In short, experience the vanilla with least bugs and optionally even better visuals!

Give thanks to /v/ from 4chan, these guys love STALKER than other games.
